I think it was a down year for the SEC. Tennessee was very talented all around, but pretty unremarkable as far as national champions go. Still, going undefeated is a huge accomplishment. Fulmer should've won more than two SEC titles with the sheer volume of talent that went through there, but Spurrier owned him.

1998 was a weak year. Much like 2019. 2010 and 2009 were also weaker years.

2010 wasn't a weak year at all. MSU finished 5th in the SEC-W and still beat the crap out of Michigan (52-14). Alabama finished 4th and beat the crap out of #7 Michigan State (49-7). Auburn won the national championship and Florida beat Penn State.

Also, 1998 was fairly normal for the 90s, imo. Tennessee was one of the best teams in the nation back then, so it's not like they just lucked into a national championship.

Remember this. That was the first year of the BCS so there were lots of eyes on all the games.

Championship Saturday started with
1 Florida State (not playing, ACC Champ)
2 UCLA (playing USC)
3 Kansas State (playing A&M)
4 Tennessee (playing State)
5 Ohio State (not playing, Big 10 Champ)

UCLA was upset by USC and A&M stormed back and won in overtime against KState. In a span of about an hour, Tennessee went from playing for a spot in the Sugar Bowl to the national championship game. I really think State was able to take advantage because Tennessee played tight. State had a good defense that year and gave them fits until the end.

They even interviewed Tresell in the third quarter because Ohio State has a chance to jump in if State won.

It was actually one of the best days of football in the past 25 years.

That would be a no. They lost at Miami in a game that was rescheduled from September due to a Hurricane.

Sorry. I was going from memory and knew it was UCLA and assumed USC in final week.

You are correct.

Actually...it started like this:

1. Tennessee
2. Kansas State
3. UCLA
4. Florida State
5. Ohio State

When the season wound down, Tennessee had been #1 in the AP for weeks, but I'd forgotten that KSU was #1 in the coaches poll. I don't remember the BCS standings. I guess I don't remember it being that close.

Tbh, I thought it was a fluke that Arkansas lost to MSU and didn't watch the SECCG until many years later. Didn't watch the Arkansas/MSU game because it wasn't on television. But that was a very good MSU team and it should have finished ranked. It's interesting that MSU won the West and beat Arkansas, but was never ranked higher, although I'm sure that early loss to Okie State had much to do with that.

It was a JP game.

Last Five Minutes: LINK

State was a good team not a great team. Defense was outstanding but no offense. Won that day with five field goals and a defensive TD.

One thing us MSU fans have over every team in the conference is that we had a big time celebrity play QB for us. Chris Rock

There are two big things you have to consider about State in '98 and '99:

1. They didn't have to play Tennessee, Florida, or Georgia in the regular season either year.

2. LSU and Auburn were both bad at the time.

Those were good State teams but they absolutely benefited from a favorable schedule. And shoot, they didn't even beat all of the bad teams they played (lost badly to Okie State and LSU in '98) and other times it was a massive struggle to beat bad teams (Auburn and LSU in '99). Nostalgia has made those two teams better to State fans than they may have actually been, in my opinion Mullen had at least 2-3 teams that were probably as good or better than those two years in the late 90's.

I'm not sure the 2000 State teams wasn't the best of that era, or at least they should have been. Beat both division winners that year (Florida and Auburn) and still somehow managed to lose four games. They controlled their own destiny in the West going into the last two games and blew double digit leads in both of them.

The team was in a funk after they lost to Tennessee. The kicker had a DWI or DUI. It was a rainy game and nasty. I believe had we won against Tennessee, Nutt would still have a letdown game like he always did. If his team wasn't in a funk then they were recovering from a hangover.

The only Mullen defensive team that could compare was 2010. Those Sherrill 98-00 teams had killer d-lines, reminiscent of the those we had in the early 80s, but probably better.
