I had forgotten about that. Seems unthinkable. Had to be super low tv ratings.

Were they allowed to ring cowbells in the Georgia Dome? Seems like a borderline health hazard. Also MSU uniforms at that time were pretty clean with the interlocking logo

Both teams played good defense....10-7 in the 4th. Not much offense.

State took the lead in the 4th Qtr but blew it. I remember Prentiss from State returning a punt return for a TD.

And they were playing their third string QB to boot. FSU might have gone back-to-back in '98 and '99 had Weinke not gotten hurt.

Our best uniforms ever. Shame we lost those. And it was actually a great game. We had a lead in the 4th quarter and lost but Tennessee went undefeated and won the natty. We gave them a game for sure.

ETA: We actually had a chance to get back the following year but Alabama’s Shaun Alexander made a huge play later in our game vs Bama on a 3rd and long and it broke our back. Bama won the west by that tie breaker and MSU finished 10-2 regular season.

It was good game. Lot of defense. MSU had a chance to win it. But then they remembered they were MSU....

Don't forget they won by a missed field goal in OT against Florida. They won on a field goal against Syracuse as time ran out. Then Chris Weinke was hurt at FSU and barely won against a backup quarterback 23-16. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. That is one of the luckiest national champs of the 90s.

The 99 MSU team was better, but slipped up at Alabama. An Alabama that lost to Louisiana Tech the previous week. State was 8-0 headed into that game.

The 98 MSU team kind of backed their way into the championship game. They lost to a bad Oklahoma State team and got killed by a 3-8 LSU team. Lost a shootout to Tim Couch and Kentucky but found a way to beat Arkansas, who was the best team in the West that year by a mile.

Arkansas pissed a game away against Tennessee and ended up 6-2. State won the tiebreaker to get to Atlanta.

They played really well for 3.5 quarters. Had a 7-0 lead and were down 10-7 after three. Returned Tennessee’s ninth punt of the game for a TD and couldn’t hold on with a lead in the last six minutes. Gave up a long TD pass then fumbled the first down after the kickoff and Tennessee scored again.
