Beats the hell out of playing two shitty programs like UL Monroe or University of South Alabama. Can we keep this format and just add one non-conference game against an equally matched opponent? So many terrible weekends out there with teams allowed to play a cupcake schedule

Small colleges that lived for those games to help their budgets will be dropping with a quickness.

Also it allows Teams to develop their talent on the depth chart in real games. It allows injuries to heal and teams to rest their starters. It prevents the conference from cannibalizing each other. I don't want a 3 loss champion limping into the playoff to satiate a fan base.

I don't give a shite about the number of losses a deserving team has since all schedules are not created equal.

That said, while I hate the "rent-a-win" games, you do make a good point for having one or two of them (I wouldn't want more than two).

The G5 was already in awful shape with cord-cutting and just general apathy. I'm not sure how they can survive losing the money games

If I were a Florida, Georgia, South Carolina or Kentucky fan I would feel the same way.

Play the 10 conference schedule and one other game that is a top 5 conference team.

Much rather sit through a game against Texas than a game against Western North Dakota State. To be the best you must beat the best.

Agreed. I dare say Id even be willing to drop 2 games permanently if its what it took to get a 10 game SEC slate each year.

Now would I rather just do 10 and have 2 OOC, well hell yes. Just saying....more SEC and other P5, less cupcake subsidies please.

If anything, scheduling one or two OOC powder puffs with IN STATE schools could be fun

That would eventually kill the sport.

While I don't want Troy St, South Alabama, FAU and/or FIU (I live in West Palm Beach) to lose their program, there is no way college football will die if they do.

Agree with the OP. We could get used to this. Add one OOC P5 each year and call it a day.

This would effectively bar UGA, UF, Kentucky, and South Carolina from playing an OOC power 5 game against anyone other than their in-state rival.

You say that, but the less people are exposed to college football at their alma mater, the less people really get into the sport.

Simply not true. Only Troy has had a team for many, many years. FAU, FIU and USA's programs are all very young. College football has been extremely popular since before I was a kid (I'm 57).

Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Bama, etc...do not need those schools to have teams to still be successful and popular.

Most of those school's students and alums are fans of the bigger schools in addition to their own. I guarantee there are more diehard Alabama fans at South Alabama than there are Jaguar fans. I grew up in Mobile and my brother and sister still live in the area. Even most of Troy's alums are also Auburn or Alabama fans. Same with FAU and FIU students/alums being Gator, Seminoles or Canes fans.

Frankly, I’ll take the extra L against Georgia just to watch some competitive football compared to a Charleston Southern or the likes. I used to love the OOC cupcakes to ensure a bowl game, but bowls have become so devalued over the years, it doesn’t even matter to me anymore.

There’s a whole big college football world outside of Alabama and South Florida. A lot of smaller programs whose alums are not fans of other teams will never feel the same connection that they do now.

Never mind that students and athletes at those places will never get to have that experience.

ETA: college football interest is already down pretty seriously in some regions. I don’t think it’s wise to totally ignore fans of non-power programs.

Reminder that they beat Alabama in Saban’s first season there.
