We were having top 10 seasons every year in the early 1970s. We could not get some guys in who met the SAT requirements for 90 percent of the schools. So we went independent. We were in the wilderness for two decades.
Duke, NC, Virginia and Wake Forest wanted us to grovel. Finally, we got an offer from the best conference in the United States.
I must admit that Clemson, NC State and Maryland wanted us back. But we had no intent to grovel. I love the SEC and always have since Bear started whipping those Yankee schools regularly.

I don’t understand why people continue to say this? Virginia has lost like 3 ACC games in two years. This is not like we are playing Kansas again, this is probably the best team in the tourney.

Most Gamecock fans, especially the older ones and those from SC, despise the ACC. Our leaving the conference in the early 1970's burned a ton of bridges and left many Gamecocks with a whole lot of hate.

For my money Texas Tech is scary good. They took down the best offense in college basketball. IMO if TT makes the finals, they will win it. If Auburn makes the finals (and I think they will) the missing player will be the difference.
