I thought it was foolish to fire him halfway through his second season but if this is true, damn you guys should have fired him sooner.

Auburn actually played a decent game last night. Thorne is talented but he has a limited skill set. Ditto Ashford.

Gus's recruiting fell off the last couple of years, and he struggled to recruit an offensive tackle for several years.

I know people probably get tired of me always talking about O and D lines, but Malzahn's last few recruiting classes were sparse on the OL. A guy at work and I were talking about it and he looked up the Auburn's OL signees the last 3 seasons under Malzhan and it was pitiful. I think the highest rated OL recruit they had sign ended up transferring to FAMU or Bethune-Cookman or some other MEAC school.
I remember a few years ago when Malzhan was still coaching and they had an OL that had like 4 Seniors and a Junior and everyone expected them to be good but they sucked. Didn't look like a unit that had 100+ starts combined coming into the season.
Looking back on it, I'd bet >50% of Bo Nix running around in the backfield his Fr. and Soph. years was his OL failing and a lack of confidence in his OL as opposed to just Nix thinking he could just out out talent a defense like how he could in high school.

3rd and 4th year at Ole Miss he beat Bama. Auburn knows the history and what he has to rebuild. The difference now is the portal and NIL. Time will tell if he adapts well. But he can recruit and coach. I think his offense is slow and to a degree conservative. But he had some serious defenses at Ole Miss. Auburn’s defense is the real deal. They just spend too much time on the field.

You can’t fall short at any position. Freeze never got a linebacker. Once Houston Nutt’s linebackers graduated our defense fell off a cliff. Year after year...not one linebacker. It cost us. Weird.
