Texas has the best recruiting setup in college football and it's not really that close.

maybe, but they can still only sign 25 a yr. add the fact that recruiting is not an exact science and you end up with a competitive team; no more, no less.

but Texas would be the least likely to fall completely off the radar and easiest to bring back.

yet tejas was completely off the radar when they hired mack from north carolina and they had been mediocre for a long time. there are lots of programs that can sign 25 players rated as good or better than texas and have all the money they need for great facilities and top level coaching. there is a point where "extra" money doesn't produce a better avg. level player. that is, unless you are out and out buying players. my point is there are at least 20 to 25 other teams in the country that have the resources to be the best year in year out. texas has, overall, underperformed in most years. while most teams struggle a bit after a NC, tejas basically fell apart and their recruiting classes were rated very high (probabaly top 5). imo, their coaching staffs are not that good and their fan base is not that demanding; after all, they seem to be very comfortable with just being texas. win or lose.

I would agree. They are certainly underachieving.

I used to read orangebloods for years and it's safe to say they have one of the most entitled fanbases sitting on an island in the corner than any other fanbase in the country. They would not be a fit.

This. The think they are God's gift to humanity. Sociopaths. They apparently are too good to be country. Ausitn is a blue dot in a red state. They are more of the hipster, wine and cheese crowd.

However, yes, they would compete in the SEC, but they are too scared to play in this conference. They want to be #1 all the time, even if it means playing abortions of schedules each year. Then they try to manipulate the masses by telling everyone that the Big 12 is stronger than ever! TCU will easily replace A&M for the Thanksgiving game! They live in their own world. frick them, glad we don't play them anymore.

I was being facetious by referring to the 2009 NC game.

The only thing that keeps them from recruiting at an even higher level is their academic standards, which I believe are pretty high.

yet we compete for the same players. if you think a schools academic standards apply to football players (with the exception of the ivy league and notre dame), you are clueless. there seems to be a huge misunderstanding in this area. if a player qualifys to play at LSU, he will qualify at texas and vice versa. in fact, the big 12 may have lower academic standards than the SEC. LSU has turned down players for admission that immediately went to a big 12 school.

Their academic standards for football players aren't akin to their normal standards. You think the 10% rule applies to these athletes?

People forget the abysmal years they had before Mack Brown. Although they have a recent national championship, Mack has only won 2 conference championships while at Texas.

Their fan base? Texas fans quit. Very fair-weather fans, and are not loud at all. Not SEC material IMO.

Everyone knows that Mack is just a GM. Manny Diaz has an SEC defense right now. They have a good stable of RB's just a shitty qb situation.

SEC defenses don't give up:

55 to Oklahoma (A&M only gave up 41)
38 to Oklahoma State (A&M only gave up 30)
48 to Baylor (A&M held them to 27)

If they would dominate in the SEC, why do they suck in the Big 12? Something's not right here.

I never said dominate but they are more in the league of LSU-Alabama than the Auburns and Arkansas

in mac brown's 13 or 14 years as the texas head coach, he has as many bcs nc's as auburn.

Exactly what I thought when I saw the question; not sure if I was being cynical or objective.
