How much do a coach’s recruiting skills matter anymore?

I think a coach’s recruiting skills still matter at something like the Group of 5 level, where even the starters will get little to no NIL money.
But at the power conference level, eh, anybody who’s good enough to start will get NIL money. So the coach’s recruiting skills don’t matter that much, since recruiting battles just go down to who’s offering the most NIL money. No matter how good of a recruiter the coach is, he isn’t going to be able to successfully recruit a player if his school is offering $500,000 and another school is offering $800,000.

For that matter, how much do a coach’s coaching skills matter anymore.
All the sudden, 7-win Sark is coming to destroy you.

Probably a lot. To me, it’s still a stretch that kids pick the highest NIL amount, and take nothing else into consideration. If that were the case, the talent would be more spread out and it wouldn’t be at the same schools that are consistently in the Top 10 of HS recruiting.
The transfers are skewing the numbers. It makes Texas Tech look like a recruiting giant now that “portal recruiting” is a thing, with its own updated star ratings.

They matter when you have schools like LSU and coaches like BK who will recruit players that other teams would never let be associated with their universities.

It still matters to a degree. I think players being involved in the process is more important now than before. Kiffin has stated a few times that Dart was a huge reason we were able to sign the transfers we did. In particular Walter Nolen and Juice Wells

It’ll matter some as you may have a situation where there are compatible NIL offers or close enough to where you take a few bucks less to play for the coach who really sold a program to you over a guy you wondered was grinding you for jollies and caused me to go viral w it on the internet.

I think recruiting skills don't matter near as much as they used to. However if NIL amounts being offered from 2 or more schools is similar it'll probably help some.

Since a coach's recruiting skill doesn't matter, their salary need to go down significantly, maybe 80% cut.

Obviously none of us know the details but the 5 star qb that just committed picked between UGA and Oregon and said neither was his highest NIL offer.

If his “recruiting skills” include winning, player development and getting guys to the NFL, it matters a lot.

How do you think they get the NIL $$$? The target of the recruiting is different but the skill is the same. Better be good at selling.

I think recruiting still matters a lot...
But the emphasis has changed. Now, you have to recruit:
1) high school stars who will start early
2) G5 and below coaches, so they will guide their surprise stars your way.
Basically, you have to set up a minor league for your program. Somewhere you can push your underperforming guys, and pluck experienced key spots like a good backup or bridge qb.
If you're a dick, those coaches will badmouth your program. If you cultivate them, they can be feeders when kids blossom

You also have to re-recruit your roster every year.

Baker is gone after this year. Y’all barely kept him last year. Only because Tulane kept their coach.
