Sitting having lunch in a restaurant with lots of Bama memorabilia on the wall. Seems like 9 of 10 photos of Bryant he's puffing away on the side line alongside the players during a game.

So, old timers, how many packs did he go through during big games?

And I know Saban chews, does he have a chaw in during the games?

This post brought to you by an abundance of pain meds and an idle mind.

doesn't surprise me that coaches would sink to the lower class of their fanbase

No telling how many packs guys like Bear and Shug smoked during a game...a bunch..lol. As to chewing on the sidelines, I think it's a secondary NCAA infraction for tobacco use by coaches or players during a game.

Pretty sure there was a coach a few years ago that got caught. He had a skoal can in his hand or something like that.

ETA: it was Tim Beckman from Illinois

Barry used to crouch down on the sidelines behind benches and players to smoke. There were pics of him doing it but nobody said anything lol.

Can't all be USC or Washington and go with Xanax and Patron to take the edge off.

During only? Because Bama still does the cigars after Tennessee and Auburn has a game where they get cigars too. Georgia?

He probably smoked a quarter per game. Today that would be overkill for a lot of people, with the advances in selective breeding, nutrition and care. But back in those days, when you take into account where the plants where grown, how (not so) fresh it was, you can imagine the potency just wasn't there, so I'd say at least a 1/4.

Please, its the Bear. It was either smoking or getting some skull from the coeds to relax him slightly during games. And I think we are very thankful we didn't get to see Bear's O face.

The Bear was who he was, he drank, he smoked, and he didn't care what you thought.
