Bill Curry won an SEC Title at BAMA. Bill Curry.
Perkins left to Coach Tampa Bay (the owner was a BAMA alum) and Perkins left lots of talent on hand for the next coach. We won 10 games during Perkins last season beating Ohio State in the Kickoff Classic to start the year. We went 9-2-1 the year before that with both losses by 2 points each.
When Perkins left he had the top rated recruiting class in the country coming in. When we hired Curry a lot of those players chose other schools. Bowden would have held most if not all of that recruiting class together.
Never said Bowden was as good as Saban.

Its more accurate to say we had 3 of the top 5 of all time. Wade/Bryant/Saban

years in a row from 2002-2006.
Probation and injury aided. Major losses of scholarships and several of our best players missed numerous games:
QB Croyle - blown knee early in the season.
LT Britt - compound fracture to lower leg middle of the season.
RB Castille - blown knee middle of the season.
OG Mathis - played several years battling leg issues.
At one point we were starting several walk-on's on defense and a couple were in the rotation on offense and defense.
When Tubberville played us and we were near full strength we beat him 31-7 away and 36-0 at home.

Well, let's see...
Denny decided to invest in football (and bring in lots of money from Jewish households in the NE that were victims of antisemitism). He built a decidedly nice and advanced campus for the Southeast at that time.
Wallace Wade (The first "Bear") comes in and makes Alabama a powerhouse and the first Southern team to attend and win The Rose Bowl (1925). Alabama becomes the darling of the entire Southeast and wins a few more of those. Wade decides to leave and go to Duke of all places, but suggests hiring Frank Thomas ( a protege of Knute Rockne). Thomas keeps the power rolling and along the way head out to recruit Don Hutson from Pine Bluff, Arkansas and comes back with Hutson and Paul "Bear" Bryant. They win some Rose Bowls too.
Bama falls on hard times in the 1950's as Bryant is climbing the coaching mountain. He "hears mama call" and leaves College Station for Tuscaloosa. While at College Station he coached a guy by the name of Gene Stallings. Bear becomes legend. Then he retired and died almost immediately.
Bama putters along until hiring Gene Stallings in 1988. He wins a NC in 1992, then the wheels fall off. Enter the "Mike" years...Dubose, Price, Shula. Other fanbases begin to gloat and mock the Tide. Meanwhile, a guy named Saban takes LSU to a NC and leaves for the NFL. One of Bear Bryant's mentorees, Mal Moore, decides to go after Saban after he hears he is unhappy with coaching in the NFL. The whole story is not known right now, but somehow, Moore convinces Saban to leave. There is a confirmed call between Saban and Gene Stallings during this time. Stallings was somehow involved in convincing Saban.
The rest will continue making history until the next decline. Not as much luck as one would think, although some is involved.

Brandon Avalos. You remember him at QB after Croyle went down and I think the back-up did too that I can't even recall his name? I think it was the Southern Miss game. I don't think we attempted a pass.
God those years were dreadful to be a Bama fan. In this league, you go from the penthouse to the outhouse quick.

I do NOT buy in to the "Nick Saban or The Bear being the best coaches in CFB History" lunacy. Here are three reasons why UAT is so successful at football: 1) UAT has an unlimited football budget and spends more money than any other SEC member on gold plated over the top gaudy football facilities 2) no university admissions office "interference" (also Bama is one of only three SEC schools, along with Ole Miss and MS State that accepts Ds on high school and/or college transcripts and 3) most importantly Saban has no interference from the UAT administration and the reality is that Bama football is only peripherally affliated with UAT. In essence you can take the McDonald's drive through guy and he could win 10 games at UAT (ie Mike Dubose won a SEC championship at UAT). How many games and/or championships would Saban win at GA Tech, Wake Forest, Iowa State, Vanderbilt et al? He is successful because he is a coach at UAT.

Word has it, that Shula asked his former coach, Ray Perkins, about whether he should take Coach Moore's advice. Supposedly, Perkins told him that " no way will they fire you! You are a BAMA man, former player. No way will they fire you! It's your program and you make the decisions!"
Whether it really went down that way or not, Shula was stubborn about it.

Nope. Bama beat LSU in '02.

God knows Alabama needs to be good at something. It is by His Grace and Mercy we have the greatest college football program the world has ever seen.
Can I get an AMEN!

Thanks for visiting. You can head back to ITAT now.

Incorrect! Bill Curry was the HC from '87-89. Coach Stallings was hired in January of '90. I was a freshman walk on under Curry and then sophomore in Stallings initial season.

Bama is not lucky to have Saban nor were they with Bear. They recognize excellence and will stop at nothing to bring in the best. If Saban would have started at Bama and left hiring LM. Then knew he was returning 2 years later they would have divorced themselves from the Mad Hatter and brought Saban back because they knew he was a winner.

Yeah, um, not a single word of that is true.
