Well, in fairness, we can't ALL have campuses in a place as lovely as, say, Knoxville...

Saban gets the QB he wanted, Brees and if Mike Shula had listened to Mal Moore and made some changes to the staff and turn over play calling. He took the advice of Ray Perkins and it led to his demise.

Yeah that bit of the story is so often overlooked. Mal Moore went to Shula after the 2006 Iron Bowl and said you gotta make changes on your staff and you have to hire a real OC to call plays. Shula had hired friends and former coaches like Dave Rader who was his QB coach at Bama in the mid 80s and who was a freaking cell phone salesman at the time Shula brought him back to Bama. Anywho, Shula flat our refuses to fire anyone or make any changes so he is canned. I dont know about the Perkins part. So had Shula not made that decision Bama does not get Saban and we would have been an annual 8-10 win team for the last decade likely with no SEC, much less national, titles.

Bama is nothing without their great coaches.

Take away all the national championship winning coaches, and Alabama has a grand total of ZERO national titles.

That doesn't look good on a t shirt, does it?

Meh. Saban was an average (8-4 average) coach before Bama.
'

Only someone spoiled by the last decade of the SEC would call "8-4" average. Average would be 6-6. 8-4 keeps you well off the hot seat at most places. Just not most SEC programs.

It’s Drew Brees to the Saints instead of the Dolphins.

I'm a Saints fan, and they won a Super Bowl. So even though it brought Saban to Bama, it hasn't been all that bad. LSU still won two SEC titles and a natty during Saban's tenure.

Unfortunately, 1/9/12 broke LSU.

Paul Bryant could be predicted because of his ties to Bama.

But Nick Saban.idk..

The Universe was in harmony when Nick Saban decided to come to Bama.Angels were singing on high. All that stuff.

We've had 4 coaches win multiple national titles and another that won 1.

Wallace Wade - 3
Frank Thomas - 2
Bear Bryant - 6
Gene Stallings - 1
Nick Saban - 4

If the Univ. had hired Bobby Bowden (who has stated numerous times he wanted the job) instead of Bill Curry in 1987 we'd have a couple more national titles.

When did Bowden retire at FSU? Asking because if Bowden goes to Bama in '87, I doubt everything plays out for Bama to ever get Saban. I don't think Bowden would have done better than Saban or even equaled him

2009, but he would have left sooner had they been able to get Saban.

Bowden played his FR year at BAMA but transferred to Howard Univ in B'ham (Samford now) because the current coach didn't allow his players to be married and Bowden wanted to get married.

Bowden would have been very successful at BAMA.

6 years in a row from 2002-2007. But who's counting?

The luckiest part is Bama got Saban by getting denied by Rich Rod

That is really what chaps my arse and grinds my gears

I'm sure he would have been very successful, but he only won twice between '87-'09. It would have only been harder for him in the SEC than he had it in the ACC all of those years. I love Bowden, I know all about his feelings for Bama and respect that. I just don't think he's as good of a coach as Saban is, and I'd rather see Bama right where they are with Saban now than what might have happened with Bowden

To answer the question honestly, the first was sort of luck. Frank Thomas stumbled across a tall kid in rural Arkansas who projected to be a serviceable end. That connection with Bryant allowed UA to lure him away from aTm.

No luck at all involved in the Saban hire. Mall threw all he had at Saban and got shot down. He settled for Rodriguez, but when that fell through, he cashed in the last of his chips and went after Saban again, and managed to win him over. All credit is due to Mal for going back to Saban after he'd been rejected.

And here they both are. The tallest and shortest guys in the shot.

LSU had the same record against Bama in that same period and I think ya'll actually got to 6 straight.

shite. Mal said himself that if he didn't come back to Tuscaloosa with Saban on that plane, he was afraid to come back at all.

Thats fine. I applaud him for getting Saban

But the fact that Saban is your coach, because another coach you offered turned you down beforehand, is very lucky

Lucky for us, sure. I'd chalk it more up to Mal's tenacity, though. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

That's right. It started way before Bryant. CPB decided to come to Bama when listening on the radio at 13yrs old to Bame winning the Rose Bowl in 1925. So, Wallace Wade started it all. Its more accurate to say we had 3 of the top 5 of all time. Wade/Bryant/Saban
