this is like asking why isn't Kentucky a football powerhouse.

Not exactly - the state of Kentucky doesn't produce football players.

The state of Georgia absolutely produces basketball players. But, as was noted earlier, the dynamic of how those kids view UGA is different.

Just bad hires, always thought Crean was overrated. A real point no ones brought up was how segregation prevented UGA from hiring John Wooden, who wanted to recruit nonwhite players.

Probably wouldn't have brought Sam Gilbert with him though

Not quite. The state of Kentucky doesn’t have the in-state talent to be a really good football program. The state of Georgia does have the in-state talent to be really good in basketball.

Your typical sidewalk UGA fan doesn't give a rats arse about basketball. To be honest, we might have the worst sidewalk fans in the conference.

Even the Alabama sidewalkers at least feign interest in Alabama softball and gymnastics.

I could speculate why, but I am swamped at work this week and don't have the time to articulate every point.

Our two decent coaching hires were run off (Harrick) and left for UK (Tubby). None of the others have been high level coaches.

That is one way to characterize it I guess

We were good under Durham, tubby, and Harrick.

This really isn't true.

Durham had that final four run, which is something to cherish but otherwise he was VERY mediocre.

17 seasons
Made 5 NCAA trips and other than the magical season he advanced past the first round ONE time.
Overall record @UGA 298-216 (54.8%) and 148-150 (49.6%)

Harrick's four seasons were slightly better. Two tourney trips that resulted in 1 win, 67-53 (55.8%) overall, 33-31 in the SEC.

Tubby's years actually were good, but there were only two of them.

Prior to Durham UGA had never been in the NCAA tourney or the NIT. He took us to 5 NCAAs and 4 NITs and the Final 4 of each. We had never won the conference regular season or tourney, we did both under him. He took one of the worst basketball programs in NCAA history and made them respectable. During much of his early time the tourney was considerably smaller than today in terms of participants.

Bunch of shitty hires, nobody at UGA really gives a shite about the program, plus Kentucky and Duke raid Atlanta.

Honestly there's no excuse for us being as bad as we are. We have a lot of money and our backyard is full of top recruits. If we land a strong coach who can recruit Atlanta we'd be a consistent tourney team

I’d be flabbergasted if I was a UGA fan. The amount of in-state talent and underachieving is like 2012-2018 LSU football — but for much longer than 6 years.

I barely survived that period... Arguably worse than just being plain bad with nothing to hope for but playing spoiler

How many times in a row did LSU choke to Bama before this season?

You must’ve missed it man... that was exactly the point/comparison.

Seems like UGA has been stacking teams with 5 stars, being feared in preseason, and then coming out like a lame duck for 2 decades. They haven’t been bad but haven’t gotten over the hump + I’d argue they should have at some point.

Reminds a lot of recent Michigan/Notre Dame. Should be an elite program, but the best part of their season is never the end.

I’m not even talking shite, that must be frustrating as hell

PS - basketball thread... mostly my football perspective but not like it doesn’t largely apply to the rest of UGA major sports as well

Baseball, Georgia has a Mountain of talent but also a MLB team with all their scouts. We lose a bunch to the draft or don't even try to sign them. The backwoods programs in the league that don't have MLB, can protect their talent better. UGA competes with the ATL braves for attendance and the Braves win, alot of other programs are the only show around. Personally wish we had an LSU or msu following.

This is pathetic.
