Personally, I'd flip Florida and Alabama in the polls and also flip Tennessee and Auburn as I think Auburn is the #1 team in the country at this point but it doesn't really matter.
I think the reasoning for having Alabama just ahead of Florida is that Alabama has 2 much better wins against Houston and Illinois as opposed to Arizona State and a more inpressive common win by 15 over North Carolina in the Dean Dome as opposed to 6 pts on a neutral court.
Alabama's loss to Purdue in Mackey Arena and to Oregon at the last second were losses to Top 12 ranked teams at the time in mid to late November. Far enough for Alabama to climb back up the polls since.
It's hard to discount the performances of both Alabama and Florida against North Carolina as well. The Alabama/UNC game in Chappel Hill was never that competitive. Alabama dominated UNC in what is probably the best game Alabama has played all season.
Florida looked really good in the first half of their game against UNC but blew the lead in the 2nd half and had to battle to the very end to hold off UNC. Alabama dominated UNC in much the same way Auburn did earlier in the season in the Maui Invitational
Neither Alabama or Florida or getting thru their SEC schedules without at 3 to 5 losses so they're both going to move down, and up, and down, etc in the AP poll throughout the rest of the season. The conference schedule is going to be a bloodbath.

Fattening Bama's hubris up before Auburn rolls into town is okay with me

Now there are 51 downvotes. There aren’t 51 Alabama fans on this board who even realize it is basketball season. So the disapproval seems to go beyond party lines.

Does it matter if youre playing for 2nd?

It makes zero sense for both Alabama to be ahead of Florida and Tennessee to be ahead of auburn. Either a significantly harder schedule matters or it doesn't
Well, it seems it does matter because Alabama has played a much more difficult schedule than Florida has and apparently that's been taken into account by AP pollsters so far this season.
Alabama and Florida have both played UNC. UNC is the best team (or tied for the best team with Arizona State) on their OOC schedule while UNC is the 5th best team on Alabama's schedule. It makes plenty of sense to have Alabama ranked ahead of Florida just as it does to have Florida ranked ahead of Alabama. A legitimate argument can be made either way.
Same with Tennessee and Auburn. Although Tennessee has gone undefeated against a tough schedule, I personally think Auburn despite having a loss should be ranked #1. Auburn lost by 4 @ Duke...arguably the most difficult road environment in the country but have otherwise dominated against a very difficult schedule. Long story short, #1 Auburn, #2 Tennessee, #5 Florida, and #6 Alabama if I was ranking them today

Bama beat UNC which you did not list as a good win for us Bams. But you did list as a good win for UF

We'll see how legit they are Satirday when they come to Rupp Arena.
Rupp is always tough, huge crowds, good UK teams, refs always seem to favor the home team by a lot.
This Gator team may be equipped to handle it, we will see on Saturday.
Go Gators.

Right and auburn has played a much more difficult schedule than Tennessee. That's why it makes no sense to factor that in between Alabama and Florida and not auburn and Tenn

We also beat Houston and Illinois.

Auburn should be #1 ahead of Tennessee and I'm not sure even Tennessee fans would object to that. Alabama and Florida is pretty whatever. Florida has looked great all year but hasn't played a fraction of the schedule Alabama has.
Luckily it's basketball and none of the poll stuff matters.

Yep, they’re suffering from the “Bruce Pearl discount” and the “embarrassing NCAAT exit discount” this year. Should be #1 at this point, but there’s really no difference between the top 2-3 teams at any point during the year.
Last year it was Purdue, UConn, and Houston battling for #1 most of the year (prior to Houston’s injuries), and 2 of the 3 made the championship game. That’s pretty rare as well.
