If you paid attention, he may have been drafted at #1, but he finished the season that year at #13 in the country. The year before that he was ranked #27 in the country. The year before that he wasn't ranked.

So his #1 draft status meant shite.

Bottom line. He was and OK college QB. That's all he was.

Couldn't read a defense to save his life.

True, he was dangerous in busted play situations. He was just so damn talented that it doesn't make any damn sense the way he let himself go the way he did after he left LSU. He needed structure and in the pros they don't provide the structure off the field like college does. That was his downfall, jamarcus being left to do whatever jamarcus wanted to do outside of his football responsibilities, and he didn't seem to take care of his football ones either as a pro.

I admittedly didn't watch a lot of JaMarcus Russell at LSU but it seemed like he was very prone to laying eggs in big games. LSU never won a conference title in his three years there while they won the SEC and NC the year before his RS freshman year (2003) and the year after he left (2007).

Russell was absolutely clutch. I can't tell you how many games we won on last minute drives. He was at his best when improvising. We lost 4 games in 2 years while he was the starter, one being the infamous 06 Auburn game.

Russell did not start his freshman year, he split time with Marcus Randall.

I mean, what? I feel like people let his pro career overshadow his college career. He was awesome at LSU.

You disagree that with the immense talent he had that he should have accomplished more at LSU? I am not sure if you can blame coaching or what, but his ceiling was higher than his production, even at LSU.

Not knocking him, but his underachieving started in college and manifested itself in the NFL.

you'll get some blowback for this but it's not totally crazy. He was meh against Tennessee in 2005 and the 2006 Florida game he accounted for multiple turnovers and we lost the game.

that having been said, he also came up with huge plays in big spots as well. I think he lead something like 10 or 11 4th quarter comebacks.

In 2006, Russell completed 67% of his passes for 3,129 yards, 28 TDs/8 ints and ended with a 167 passer rating.

Badly overrated
He was surrounded by great talent , similar to QB’s at Miami in the 90’s and current Bama QB’s. So in fact they look better than they really are.
Superb college QB though in the system he was in.

Auburn interfered with Early Doucet on that 4th down play at the end of the game, I wont ever let that go. Picking up that flag still pisses me off.

in spite of the rules of football...clear video evidence...the fact that LSU benefited from the exact same situation/call against UF this year....the rules of football...just won't ever let it go. Ok. Congrats on the 11th (or whatever) anniversary of your moral victory

Ok well let’s look at another immensely talented arm in the SEC who had great weapons to throw to, Matthew Stafford:

Stafford last year:
235/383, 61.4% completion, 3,459 yards, 9.0 Y/A, 25 TDs/10 INTs, 153.5 QBR

Jamarcus last year:
232/342, 67.8% completion, 3,129 yards, 9.1 Y/A, 28 TDs/8 INTs, 167 QBR (highest in nation)

No one claimed Stafford under-performed.

I coached against him when he was a 6' 5" 220 freshman QB at Williamson High. I saw the ability and talent then and I told him as much after he led them down the field against us in the last 2 minutes to beat us in the playoffs. Damn shame what his career turned in to.

He was the #1 overall pick for a reason. Pro scouts and gms from every team in the league would have drafted him 1st overall if they had the opportunity. He was touted as being the most arm talented qb scouts had ever seen going into the draft, and thats a fact. I remember his proday at lsu just before the draft and the shite he did was amazing. He wowed everyone there. Jamarcus was a special qb. It's not up for debate honestly lol. He had some of the best physical tools in a qb ever coming out of college at LSU and he was considered to be a sure thing prospect. That's why he's considered prob one of the top 5 busts of all time without question. It just dint make any sense the way he handled himself as a pro with all of the talent in the frickin world to work with. Nothing physical held jamarcus back, it was everything but that.
