Is this a joke? He led the entire big 6 conferences in passer rating his final season.

Did you happen to see him at LSU? And later Russell? Just kind of curious to hear from someone who saw both.

Not old enough to have seen Bert Jones, but I did see Hodson and Russell...Hodson still most accurate arm I've seen in TS, but Russell's power PLUS accuracy I don't see being touched any time soon.

I LOVED Rohan...but Jamarcus made him look like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man...until, of course, Jamarcus BECAME the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.

I was talking with a buddy of mine about all the different Bama/LSU games we have been to and both of us remembered Jamarcus beating Bama in Bryant Denny ~10 years ago. I walked out of that game thinking he was going to be an NFL great.

Was his ceiling as high as anybody we've seen come through the SEC in the last 20 years or so? I know there were lots of reasons why he failed, and it's a damn shame he did. But I cant remember a player with more potential.

Physically, he was unmatched. He had the strongest arm I've ever seen. And, he would stand in the pocket and deliver the ball. And, when he had to, he could leave the pocket and make plays downfield (way downfield with his arm strength).

He didn't care enough to develop the mental approach. He couldn't stay in shape. That affected him but more than that it was an indicator that he didn't have anywhere near the drive to succeed in the NFL.

Success in the NFL is almost never about physical attributes. Even Aaron Rodgers, who is immensely talented, is successful due to his understanding of the game and ability to process information during the play. Jamarcus had none of that ability.

Yeah, these fricking idiots that say anything other than jamarcus possessing the strongest arm and some of the best physical tools that theyve ever seen a qb possess, are just stupid, don't know football, lying, didn't actually see him play, are trolling, or a combination of all. Jamar us had the potential to be one of the greatest qbs to ever play the game and that is the truth. He was magnificent. God given talent that I've never seen before or after yet. Sucks that we didn't get to see him reach his full potential.

I admittedly didn't watch a lot of JaMarcus Russell at LSU but it seemed like he was very prone to laying eggs in big games. LSU never won a conference title in his three years there while they won the SEC and NC the year before his RS freshman year (2003) and the year after he left (2007).

He was amazing in a lot of ways but he was always good for a pick or two against a good d.

Yeah, but you could say the same for alot of other great qbs. Peyton manning never could win the big game at tennessee and they won the natty the year after he left, with tee martin lol, for one example. Eli and archie are two others, lol, the mannings couldn't win the big games for shite in college. The manning curse I guess.

Sadly, all he ever had to do to win games was just show up (which catches up with 'em eventually} and it's the scourge of many God-gifted athletes...never knowing how to work hard/ practice properly cuz they flat-out never had to.

Buga being the exception that proves the rule.

JR was the classic case of someone's talent holding them back. He never learned how to systematically play QB and, like another posted said, was able to make spectacular "sand lot" plays, but could never consistently throw a 5 yard out on a 3 step drop.

It was this inconsistency that made it so hard for him to produce in the NFL (and some in college).

I still say that he had the absolute strongest arm on any QB I have ever seen. He was phenomenal in hitting WR's 60 yards down the field with little to no effort. I just wish that he would have learned the basics before he got the praise and attention he got.

Russell was WAY better than Mauck or Flynn. HE would have won a championship with either that 2003 or 2007 team too.

Keep in mind Russell's 2006 team only lost 2 games just like the 2007 team. The 2007 team just happened to be fortunate everyone else lost 2 games that year except tOSU.

I mean, what?

I feel like people let his pro career overshadow his college career. He was awesome at LSU.

And Jimbo laid a fricking egg in Auburn. That was not on Russell.

Agreed. I'll also say that every time he rolled out (designed or because he was flushed out) I would say out loud "we're fricked" and 99% of the time I was right.

I wonder how much better he would have been disciplined if he played under Saban.

I’ll never forget his touchdown throw to Buster Davis against UT in 06. That was one of the hardest thrown passes I’ve ever seen

4:00 mark

Well

If you paid attention, he may have been drafted at #1, but he finished the season that year at #13 in the country. The year before that he was ranked #27 in the country. The year before that he wasn't ranked.

So his #1 draft status meant shite.

Bottom line. He was and OK college QB. That's all he was.

Couldn't read a defense to save his life.

Auburn interfered with Early Doucet on that 4th down play at the end of the game, I wont ever let that go. Picking up that flag still pisses me off.
