How good was Jamarcus Russell?

I was talking with a buddy of mine about all the different Bama/LSU games we have been to and both of us remembered Jamarcus beating Bama in Bryant Denny ~10 years ago. I walked out of that game thinking he was going to be an NFL great.
Was his ceiling as high as anybody we've seen come through the SEC in the last 20 years or so? I know there were lots of reasons why he failed, and it's a damn shame he did. But I cant remember a player with more potential.

Stafford and Newton are the only two that really compare in the last 10-12 years from an ability standpoint.

Anyone with the arm talent that he had could have been great. Unfortunately he loves cough syrup more than football.

He was a very good qb in college for LSU. He was the best qb that saban has ever recruited/signed. I don't think it's even close, and I'm sure saban would tell you the same. He wasnt the #1 overall pick for nothing. Dude had a Frickin howitzer for an arm, an absolute cannon, and was very accurate. He was a damn good qb, and he would have had success in the nfl if he didn't get that huge contract and pretty much say "oh well, frick it, I got my money, I'm set for life regardless of what happens now, so I'm going to be a lazy mfer and sip lean and stay fricked up instead of perfecting my craft". He had so much potential, it hurt to see him just give up and piss away his career like he did. Anyone that says he wasn't extremely talented, with one of the best arms to ever play the game, is flat out biased and lying. Jamarcus Russell never reached his full potential in the league, but in his time at LSU, I can't think of any qb in college or pro football that had the arm talent he possesed. It's a damn shame.

For pure physical talent? One of the most gifted quarterbacks to play in the SEC.
Unfortunately, he was notoriously lazy with film study, couldn't keep his weight down, and didn't have the greatest attitude.

How old are you?
Reason I asked is I've been in a couple of debates about who had the best arm as a qb. Jamarcus Russell is one of the few I've ever seen that might have had a stronger one than Bert Jones.
Did you happen to see him at LSU? And later Russell? Just kind of curious to hear from someone who saw both.

No, I didn't see bert jones. However, as i stated, I've NEVER seen ANY qb with the pure arm talent that he had. He legit had the strongest arm and threw some of the prettiest passes that I've EVER seen ANYBODY throw. He was deadly accurate as well, and put touch on the ball with perfection when he needed to. There is no possible throw that he couldn't make easily. He was a damn good qb, he just squandered all of it over dope and being lazy. He was special, no doubt. Like pro football hall of fame special, in regards to his arm talent, and that is no exaggeration. I'm telling you, if he did what he was supposed to as a professional and put in the time, effort, and work, like he should have, the sky was the limit for him. If his drive, discipline and work ethic matched his arm talent, we possibly could be talking about him as one of the best qbs to ever play the game. It is a damn shame how it all went down with jamarcus, truthfully very sad for him. Not too upset for him though, bc he did it to himself, and he's got a shitload of money, lol.

At the time, the Raiders were awful.
He got stuck in a similar situation as Kizer with the Browns.
Off the field, he didn't help himself either.
$30 million without playing a down tends to do that to some.
He bought a whole row or a bunch of seats for a LSU Bowl game one year and the whole row was empty

JR was never great in college. He was slightly good in the 2nd half of his final season. The only reason he went number 1 was because the Raiders had the first pick, and JR had 2 long pass plays against a lousy ND defense in the bowl game. If anyone else had that pick, JR would not have gone first.

he was the greatest sand lot qb of all time. his great plays were busted plays. he'd be standing back in the pocket with defenders hanging off of him, not able to bring him down because of his size. he might move around a little bit, looking downfield. he'd wait around until a receiver came open way down the field and he would then flick the ball 60 yards right on target. huge guy, huge arm.
