Totally agree.

Bluebonnet Bowl renamed to Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl.

Liberty Bowl is an old one (at least back to the 1960s) as well.

By the time mid February rolls around, we’ll be watching replays of these no name bowls. I have only watched 2 bowls so far but I do plan on watching most of the replays. What else is watchable? Regular cable/streaming services suck and Netflix is played out at this point. I won’t pay attention to b-ball until March Madness. The NBA will come up with a new version of traveling (Eurostep). It’s wandering in the wilderness time of year

Not me. I haven't been able to watch them live.
What else is watchable? You may have a point there. But there are better things to do than watch Tv.

Football is far and away the most popular sport in this country.

ESPN will have better ratings on this game than anything else they could show. The non-playoff New Year’s Six games do better or equal ratings on cable than the NBA finals do on network TV.

you likely go back to only 9 bowl games like it used to be in the late 70s: Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta, Sun, Citrus, Gator, Independence

Sounds gay

I think it has more to do with local monetary impacts for the communities these games are played in. I mean honestly before the BCS era I didn’t care about the Rose bowl even unless it was some great matchup. Bowl games are only important to the fans of the teams who get invited unless they’re a spoiled fan base that is.

That's the one in Houston that they now call the Texas Bowl. I don't know why they dropped the old name because I thought it was cool. I know several guys that played in the Bluebonnet Bowl.

There were 15 bowls in 79 (including Garden State, Holiday, Bluebonnet, Peach, Hall of Fame, and Liberty which you didn’t list)

11 bowls were the late 60s and early 70s

They make it on tv deals because folks like me enjoy watching football. Any football if I can. My wife it’s watching some masked singer show in the living room. I’m watching the Birmingham bowl in my man cave because footballs on. Simple as that.

There should be 14 bowl games, period. Top 20 are guaranteed bids.

Rose - Big Ten and Pac champs
Sugar- SEC champ and at large
Orange- ACC champ and at large
Cotton - Big 12 champ and at large
Fiesta - two top non champ at larges
Sun - pac 12 vs big 12
Citrus - sec vs big 10
Gator - big 10 vs ACC
Liberty - sec vs at large
Holiday - big 10 vs pac 12
Hall of fame (Reliaquest)- big 10 vs at large
Tangerine (cheez it)- ACC vs big 10
Peach - ACC vs at large
Independence - Top 2 available G5 teams

After the bowls, pick the four teams for the playoffs.

In my world, here are the matchups (bold have playoff implications)

Rose - #2 Michigan vs #8 Utah
Sugar- #1 Georgia vs. #9 Kansas State
Orange- #7 Clemson vs. #6 Tennessee
Cotton - #3 TCU vs. #10 Southern California
Fiesta - #4 Ohio State vs. #5 Alabama

Sun - #12 Washington vs #20 Texas
Citrus - #17 LSU vs #11 Penn State
Gator - Purdue vs #13 Florida State
Liberty - #22 Mississippi State vs #16 Tulane
Holiday - big 10 vs #14 Oregon State
Hall of fame (Reliaquest)- #15 Oregon vs #19 South Carolina
Tangerine (cheez it)- #21 Notre Dame vs Iowa
Peach - #23 NC State vs #18 UCLA
Independence - #24 Troy vs #25 UTSA

I’m not sure if it still applies, but there was a time that schools invited were on the hook for x number of tickets whether they sold or not. It was/is one of the reasons schools lost money by accepting bowl bids, but ate the cost to reward the players and help recruiting.

I do remember it was in Houston because I remember it being played at Rice University.
But it seems like there was a gap between the Bluebonnet and Texas Bowl.

If you don’t like BWW then nothing is ever really going to change your mind on that short of some huge drastic change.

But most ads are aimed at fence sitter and people who already like a product and need a gentle push to go get it.
