The kid is right in the middle of the state, had great numbers in high school and junior college...why did they not offer?

He’s obviously extremely accurate and a natural leader.

I doubt he’ll have sustained NFL success, but he’s clearly an NFL level QB, even if as a back-up, eventually.

He was a 190 lb 2* coming out of HS.

State had a lazy recruiter who couldn't sign the talent in his own back yard

&

Ole Miss had a star gazer who was more interested in recruiting rankings than needs.

Some kids develop and some don't. Look at all the 5* busts and the 3* superstars. It may not be the norm, but it happens. All of Texas missed on Drew Brees.

Same way Alabama and Auburn missed on Phillip Rivers and LSU missed on Dak Prescott.

And it wasn't just State and Ole Miss. The kids best offer ever was to hold a clipboard and start his GA tenure for Bama, after his East Carolina career.

The Pirate's offense at Wazzou made a name for Minshew and he was good enough to capitalize on it.

Not specific to Ole Miss or MSU. No one offered the kid. He camped at Ole Miss multiple times. He signed with ECU out of JUCO and was mediocre there as a starter. He almost gave the game up to become a coach.

He's making it work right now but he has average at best arm strength. Chad Pennington made it work for a few years.

I doubt he’ll last, but he’s off to the best start for a QB in NFL history. He’s unremarkable, physically. He’s smart though...apparently making an 42 on the wonderlic test.

I ask the question in the OP facetiously. I don’t think anyone could have predicted this level of success.

It’s pretty crazy that Leach noticed his talent from ECU.

I also have a theory. Drop back passers are out of favor in todays game, and aren't rated higher. 15 years ago, most 5* QBs were drop back guys. So guys like Minshew are given any room to grow.

Not sure if Pennington ever had the defensive, rb, or wr talent that Minshew has. He doesn't need elite arm strength or speed at Jacksonville. He's on fire right now and I hope it lasts for him.

A buddy of mine coached him in HS and even he is surprised by the success he's had.

Ole Miss was signing Shea Patterson the next year so they wanted to sign someone they knew they could move to a different position if they needed to. That wasn't Minshew.

Minshew did not fit the offense that Dan Mullen ran at MSU. Also he was often overlooked due to height concerns, when we graduated he was 5'11"-6' at best.

Does Gardner Minshew look like he fits in a power spread/Qb option offense? Come on, man

I am proud of him. However I saw him play in HS several times. He was a good HS QB but I thought then he would be Juco/D2.
To his credit, he has worked hard and developed.
I hope he keeps on knocking it out on the NFL level.
But given how he looked in HS, it was no surprise then that he was not offered a scholarship on the SEC level.

Also , his story is incredible with all the stops and then Washington State last year. Not sure he would be in the NFL had he not had this journey through college.

For an absolute laugh, here are the QBs that SEC schools signed instead:

Alabama: Blake Barnett
MSU: Nick Tiano
Vandy: Kyle Schurmer
Tennessee: Quinten Dormady, Jauan Jennings, Sheriron Jones
Arky: Ty Storey
Mizzou: Drew Lock
Auburn: Tyler Queen
UGA: Nick Robinson
A&M: Kyler Murray
Ole Miss: Jason Pellerin
LSU: Justin McMilan
SCAR: Lorenzo Nunez

Same way Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina missed on Steph Curry.

Just wasn't as polished in high school and size was on the low end. He grew up and became a man. Sometimes it just takes hard work, the weight room, and the ability to be coachable.

Same for Dak Prescott. his drive to be successful was over the top. He put in the work on his own during the off season like he was practicing during the fall and progressively got better.

I watched him play in high school. He was an Al Bundy special. Was not a bad player, but you didnt come away thinking you saw anything spectacular. What he did at WSU was amazing and Im glad to see him having some success at Jax.

But this wasn't a case of a missed talent. No one thought he'd be anything but a junior college backup QB. But he didn't fit into what State and Ole Miss were doing at the time, either.

He's a smart dude. Made a 42 on the wonderlic. Average NFL QB is 24 and average engineer is 30. Greg McElroy was a 43.

Yep. LSU didn't miss - they were just late. That happens sometimes.
