LSU fans here loved to point out that among SEC teams; Ole Miss had the 14th ranked strength of schedule in ‘25 and the 16th and dead last SOS in ‘24.

But now they like to brag about Kiffins record in ‘24 and ‘25. It is a peculiar thing to observe.

It's like when you said Kiffin was a good coach and then said it'd be a miss if he turned them down.

And then you said it was a bad hire.

Kelly needed a break from coaching. I wish he would have waited to take his break until after leaving LSU.

In all seriousness, I do tend to think he was just tired fo the whole coaching schtick.

LSU has more football titles than Georgia. Sorry for ruining your thread.

Pretty sure they both have 4.

Kiffin has never coached a playoff game. He's sooooo overrated. Golden Boy Golding was the glue to Ole Miss.

If Kiffin had been smart, he would have done a gentleman's agreement with LSU, but not announced it until after the layoffs. I get that LSU was anxious for him to be the face of the program, but he could have coached the playoffs AND been the coach at LSU if he had just stayed quiet. Hindsight is always 20/20, though.

Wouldn't have worked, word is that LSU would have waited but Ole Miss was going to force him to make a decision.

Anything they did likely wouldn't have held up legally but it would've been a huge PR mess.

December 1999, LSU made Nick Saban the highest paid coach in college football. Saban, up to that point, hadn’t won anything noteworthy.

I guess… LSU made a really poor decision hiring him and paying him so much too.

I know this has been spoken to in this thread numerous times, but Current LSU coach Lane Kiffin, current LSU General Manager, Billy Glasscock, and current LSU OC Charlie Weis, Jr are the architects, builders, and brains behind the best 5 year run in Ole Miss history.

That was my point. had he not made it so public it could have worked. Once he started a bidding war the pressure was on for him to make his plans public. I get it. You go public so the teams do start a bidding war and you can get more money. But he sacrificed his opportunity to coach in the playoffs. Can you imagine what the hype around him would have been like if Ole Miss had played in the National Championship game?

This is not meant to be critical. Just pointing out that sometimes it would be better to not be in the spotlight. Especially if LSU was willing to wait...and i am sure they would have.

I think Josh Pate made a great point in that if LSU were just sitting open 2 weeks into December, Ole Miss would forced his hand if he's just refusing to sign their extension.

Kiffin was always going to be watched like a hawk because there were so many jobs open and he was the "hot name" this cycle.

Yes on both. It would have been a miss for Kiffin. $73 million is a lot of money. And it would have been an embarassing miss for LSU if he had told them no after going all in on him.

And when it is all said and done, LSU fans will agree it was a bad hire.

We the fans are paying WAY too much.
The $$ amounts on everything in sports could be cut in half & it would still be overpriced.
Has the product gotten better in the past 25 years?

No he doesn’t. His contract is 80% guaranteed. If he can just manage to not get fired for cause he will be paid $73 million by LSU regardless of wins and losses.

He has to earn keeping his job, the one he wanted most. You know that and hate it. Keep melting about LSU.

It is amazing how weak the OM schedules are looking back on it. The non-conference games in particular are incredibly easy. Wonder how long it takes Kiffin to get LSU playing the likes of Tulane OOC. Oh wait, that school was a playoff team
