I assume pre-med is more difficult than someone going for criminal justice or elementary education or whatever.

I would bet it is major specific but pre-med can probably be any science heavy major. I transferred to GT after my freshman year and the GPA requirement varied based on how crowded the discipline school was. At the time, way back in the day, you could only transfer into the electrical engineering school if you had a 3.7. The mechanical engineering school required a minimum of a 3.2 GPA. That is how I suddenly decided my life long dream was to become a mechanical engineer. LOL. It might be just the opposite these days.

not really

yes - lot's of MS State people here, so maybe?

but one reason is, it is VERY easy to get in to

I went to UGA (was accepted to GA Tech and went there 1 semester & did not enjoy it) -- graduated high school in '87; Auburn was viewed as the school that people went to if they could not get in UGA (Auburn has improved DRAMATICALLY insofar as academic reputation since then, even rated higher than Alabama at the moment, and UGA is also MUCH harder to get in than it was back then)

MS State (and also Ole Miss) are both seen as "backup schools" for kids that can't or don't get in Alabama or Auburn (just like AU used to be seen in GA)

UAB has a fairly low barrier for acceptance; especially for locals

State is very aggressive in Alabama. They got me 30 years ago with the same strategy.

It's an SEC experience and if you are in the high 20s/low 30s on ACT, it's cheaper than Alabama/Auburn until you get to a 33 ACT.

So if you are a student with a 31 ACT, you can get a full ride at State or pay $8000 a year at Auburn or $5000 a year at Bama. Some families are choosing State when it comes down to the money. Plus Starkville is cheap compared to the rest of the SEC. Apartments are about $650-$700 a bedroom vs. Oxford/Athens/Auburn around $1100 and Tuscaloosa near $1000.

If you are a middle class family and costs are a factor in your college choice, you can go to State for the cost of Jax State/South Alabama/Troy and have an SEC experience. That's what got me to Starkville. I was headed to Jax State or UAB.
you can get really nice apartments in Auburn for $600 - $1000 a month - my son goes next year (my 3rd of 4 kids going to AU) and his rent is $700 a month in a 4BR in a really nice complex - there are some really expensive places as well; but apartments are plentiful and affordable (AU does not have enough student housing, not all freshmen can even get in the dorms, so apartments have really stepped up and the University actually promotes and works w apartment communities)

indeed - they offer A LOT more than Auburn (that is why I scoff at those that say Bama is a better school than AU)

Ole Miss seems to be popular among Oconee/PACS students who want to go to a "big" school but who either don't want to stay local or who can't get into UGA.

I live in the Baton Rouge area...

Both of my kids just graduated both college and high school...

Oldest just graduated from Auburn and will be pursuing a PhD at Texas A&M

Youngest decided to go to Mississippi State

I would say my two are the outliers .... I'd say a majority of the kids around here go to LSU, for obvious reasons

Not one person has said this in this thread. But to answer the OP, Bama has basically ignored metro areas in this state for whatever reason and has focused more on rural areas. Basically the same thing AU did for most of its history until recently. Bama and AU have very similar number of in state kids. The only difference is the percentage relative to the total.

My kid is starting Bama in the fall.

If an in-state student gets 30 minimum ACT plus has the GPA, they get full tuition rides.

Now like everyone else, they jack up the room/board costs, but it's still pretty solid. Auburn costs are similar, but they didn't offer quite as much scholarship wise...and we're obviously biased and he wanted to go to UA. Auburn is a good school...but honestly Bama's campus blows it away. More local kids here seem to go to Auburn (also it's an easier drive), but seems there were a few more choosing Bama than in the recent past this year. Maybe they just want to experience an actual winning football season...who knows.

Distance probably a plays a part here. Far enough away to feel like you’re moving off but close enough to where you could come home every weekend if you wanted.

Yes. My nephew who graduated from high school in the Mandeville/Covington area just finished his sophomore year at Bama. I remember being surprised at how many of his classmates were going to Bama as well.

I moved to the Mandeville/Covington area a year ago and a few of my clients and an LSU grad co-worker raved about how nice the Bama campus tour was even though a couple of the students ultimately decided to go elsewhere. It seems like most of the kids in that area who go out of state go to either Ole Miss, Bama, or MSU.

Southern Miss is another popular out of state option for a lot of kids in that area it seems likely due to proximity

i assume this is just how the trickle down works. all the dumb kids in atlanta go to bama and auburn so all the dumb kids in alabama go to ole miss and mississippi state.

all the dumb kids in mississippi go to prison

This isn’t new. The wealthier parts of Birmingham are now dominated by Auburn.

The Alabama Commission on Higher Education releases data every year. The Fall 2025 enrollments haven’t been released yet (usually released in May, so could be any day now).

Here are how the OTM High schools split in Fall 2024:

Mountain Brook: 74 to AU / 75 to Bama
Vestavia Hills: 149 to AU / 90 to Bama
Homewood: 72 to AU / 37 to Bama
Spain Park: 65 to AU / 47 to Bama
Hoover: 86 to AU / 96 to Bama
Oak Mountain: 67 to AU / 47 to Bama
TOTAL OTM Area: 513 to AU / 387 to Bama

Here was the Fall of 2023 enrollees:

Mountain Brook: 94 to AU / 78 to Bama
Vestavia Hills: 147 to AU / 107 to Bama
Homewood: 62 to AU / 41 to Bama
Spain Park: 41 to AU / 46 to Bama
Hoover: 100 to AU / 77 to Bama
Oak Mountain: 64 to AU / 31 to Bama
Total OTM Area: 508 to AU / 366 to Bama

It’s essentially a 57% - 43% split each year, and it’s now been this way for about 15 years. Over time, this really starts to compound.

You see it around town too… there’s just way more Auburn everywhere. At the ballpark, you see 30 kids running around with Auburn tshirts and you just don’t see much Bama stuff anywhere… now if you move over to other parts of town I’m sure there is Bama everywhere, but it’s just not the case in the OTM area.

Random kids at a random church are not “being recruited” generally speaking.

UAB is a fine university, but I wouldn't fault a kid from Birmingham not wanting to go there

UAB is a good option for some people, but not many Birmingham kids are going to choose to go there unless they don’t have many other options.

The three best high schools in the state… Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, and Homewood… are all located less than 15 miles away, and here are how many kids they sent to each of these public state universities in the last year with data:

296 to AU
201 to Bama
40 to UAB

this is surprising to me. Granted it's HIGHLY anecdotal but I live in Vestavia and it seems like the bama fans aroudn here outnumber the auburn fans like 10 to 1. Obviously this isn't scientific and just based on car flags, house flags, T-shirts, etc. so not actaully a legit study in any way. I guess I would have just thought those enrollment numbers wouldn't have been so highly skewed in auburn's favor.

Question for you- why do you think that is? It is JUST the difference in academic requirements for incoming freshman or something else?

UAB is sort of strange...

It started as an "extension" of the University of Alabama... so it was intended to be a typical commuter/part time/night school for people in B'ham...

Then suddenly it got the state's Medical School plopped into it.

For Georgians it would be like if all of the sudden in 1945... Georgia State University got the Medical School of Georgia dropped in its lap.
