The SEC makes $$$ on that game
The root of all evil.
Hypocrisy and $$$$$$$$$.
TV/Big Corp/Big Tech/Big Banks are in control .... the bottom line is that it's all about the hypocrisy and the money.
Lemme ask everyone this.
What if the SEC decides to blaze a path forward towards no conference championship game, thus sparing its two best teams from the extra wear and tear and potential for injury headed into the playoff.
And let's say the SEC continues to absolutely dominate ... even moreso. Puts 4 teams in the playoffs every year .... wins championships 80% of the time.
Anyone believe that conference championship games mean anything to top prospects? Anyone believe it really means anything to the fans when, for 90 years prior to 1992, there were no conference championship games and conference champions were determined just fine.
How long before other conferences follow suit?
A: It would happen overnight. You know why? Because National Championships and playoff dominance will generate 10x the money, 10x the conference revenue, that the one Conference Championship Game in Atlanta will generate ... and with far less risk and chance.
It's not 1992 anymore Toto, and this ain't the old network TV revenue landscape.

SEC #3 vs #6
SEC #4 vs #5
This makes more sense to me.. or something like that, preferably avoiding repeat matchups.
#1 and #2 should be pretty much guaranteed a spot.
Giving those next 2 or 3 teams an extra bullet to make their argument makes a lot of sense to me.
As an example
#1 Georgia 12-0
#2 Alabama 11-1
#3 10-2 Texas vs #6 10-2 Missouri
#4 10-2 Ole Miss vs #5 10-2 Tennessee
That should give us 4 teams pretty guaranteed.
Georgia, Alabama + 2 winners
Why the frick are you intent on adding more loses and injuries to the conference right before the post season?

With the schedules being harder I would think a 10-2 SEC or Big 10 team is basically a lock for a playoff spot.

Agreed. That extra game could mean suffering a key injury or 2 that wrecks a team's chances in the CFP. This ain't baseball.

Playoff should have never been expanded to begin with. Conf Champs and we are done. None of this crap to deal with. Winning your Conf should mean something, now it means nothing at all. Garbage.

Disney might object to one of the most watched games of the year being dropped.

Contracts???

quote:
The SEC Championship game is currently under contract to be held in Atlanta, Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium through at least 2031, with an option to extend the contract for an additional five years to 2036;

Why? 13-16 has no chance and will never win it. It’s just appeasing those who can’t make top 12.

yeah I can see how burdensome playing in this SEC Championship game has been to the Ole Miss football program. Oh, wait, never mind. Carry on.

Hey man just because y’all can’t ever do what’s required to play in it doesn’t mean you get to ruin the fun for everyone else

I believe something like this will happen. It’s quickly going to become apparent the championship game is a problem for the SEC/BIG since in the current playoff 3rd place is better than 1st or 2nd. The obvious solution would be to drop the game, but the more lucrative solution will be to ADD one or two games. All the other conferences will follow suit, and bam, extra weekend of playoff caliber tv.

It’s def going to 16 whether they do this or not. And SEC 9 conf games Bookit.

I value the SEC championship almost as much as a natty, and over the years that game has meant a lot whenever BCS and/or playoff frickery has been afoot. You always control your own destiny for the SEC CG.
The only change I would make is moving it around or cycling it between 3-4 different locations that suck less than ATL.

No surprise that an Ole Miss fan wants to get rid of something they’ve never played in (while Miss St has).

So a playoff for 3rd place in conference?

The SEC won`t do anything until a team gets knocked out of the playoffs
because they lose that game .then all hell breaks loose. The one constant
in this country is we are REACTIVE NOT PROACTIVE.

SEC will get no less than 3 teams in the playoffs, the key is to not blow through the SEC undefeated, but do well enough to be the 3rd team.
Only 3 entities benefit from the SECCG: conference (of course) Winner of the game (first week bye, home playoff game) and the team that almost made it in. (Gets to rest players yet still gets in the playoffs)
Loser of the CCG not only gathers more bumps, bruises and possible season ending injuries, but they have to turn around and play an opponent that will range from good to great the following week.
