Coaching quality: The Case against Kirby Smart (and for Dan Mullen)

https://www.readandreaction.com/2020/07/14/coaching-quality-the-case-against-kirby-smart-and-for-dan-mullen/

Kirby Smart is a great recruiter, but an average coach. Dan Mullen is an average recruiter, but a great coach.

I really enjoy the fact that Florida is now talking up the idea of doing more with less, as if that’s the goal.

Neither way is good. Georgia’s four-decade “less with more” streak is certainly not ideal either.

All said and done, I'd rather have the great recruiter than the great coach. No natty for either before 2030, though.

He forgot about our loss to Missouri two years ago it seems on there. He has good points overall though. Mullen needs to recruit better long term and Smart needs better football minds beside him, especially on offense.

The problem with Georgia's "more" is that the more has too often not been on the field due to injuries and suspensions for various reason. Put this way: our fielded team is too often much less talented than our recruiting rankings which to some extent explains our "underachievement". I would also add that we have never had a championship level/NFL level talent at QB other than Matt Stafford who had a insufficient supporting cast.

His biggest flaws, in addition to conveniently skipping both the 2018 Mizzou and Kentucky games, were his complete misunderstanding of 2015/16 for uga.

Mullen, in time will be proven to be a better coach than Kirby. It will take a while and patience from NegaGators who want everything to happen "today" but time will tell.

Kirby hiring great minds on offense then allowing them to do their jobs and staying out of their way is a bad thing? Especially since he was a DC?

Stafford had an amazing supporting cast in 2008. He was very careless with the ball though, and that problem has plagued him throughout his entire career in Detroit.

Our play calling that year also left a lot to be desired. It seemed like Richt didn't give Bobo full control until the Murray years.

Looks like another "sports journalist" is getting subject ideas from the SECR.

Happens almost every day with Atlanta sports talk radio.

Amongst others.

Kincade and Oliver are the worst offenders
and Chuckery does it on 92.9 quite often.

Aaron Murray is the leading passer in SEC
history and Fromm is the all time cumulative QBR and both had better careers
in college than Stafford.

He is staying out of the way?

You don't believe that do you? I highly, highly doubt Coley wanted the offense they had last year after watching him in Miami. He was a terrible OC, that was known but Georgia fans rationalized the hire. That wasn't how his offense in Miami ran though. Kirby certainly had influence on the game plan.

Just like Muschamp while he was here. He was an elite recruiter(Kirby is better at this though), and a great defensive mind. He could not get out of the way of his offense, and still can't. Smart has to show he can do that. Even Muschamp had an insane year his second year at UF, and would have been in the playoffs just like Kirby had we had playoffs then.

The question is has Kirby learned his lesson? He has absurd talent. He has to figure out how to best use it.

Mullen on the other hand is stubborn in his own way. He seems to think he can develop enough to not have to suck up to elite recruits. While he is great at getting the best out of his kids, it's always better to have kids with elite talent to get the best out of. Five Stars have the highest ceiling. He has done a great job developing 3 stars and lower rated four stars. That can only get you so far though. He's got more talent now than when he started, but it's not enough to build a team that can compete yearly.

Right now we are like Auburn. Every few years we will have a very strong team that can contend, but a lot of years there will be 2-3 losses until the roster is ready to make that next push. If we recruit the elite players better we can be like Clemson. Not getting the ultra elite classes, but landing 4-6 top 100 players each class, a couple of five stars, and filling the rest with guys that fit the system should be our goal. He will never recruit like Saban, Meyer, or Smart. He can recruit like Dabo given time though I hope.

Mullen will figure it out. I am a big fan of his. Anyone that can have Mississippi State #1 in the nation for 3 weeks can win championships at Florida. Mullen made Felipe Franks serviceable, that was a damn near miracle because he is garbage.

Put it another way. As a LSU fan Mullen at Florida with their resources and talent pool scares the shite out of me. Kirby at Georgia doesn't bother me one bit, matter of fact I hope he stays right there.
