He was good. I dislike most announcers so that's high praise.

I’ve always compared Gary to Bill Raftery. When they stick to actually analyzing the game, they’re terrific. It’s when they get sidetracked with all their foolishness, that they become a hindrance to the broadcast.

I used to want to punch Raftery through the screen with all of his little catch phrases.

I give him a C plus. He has adequate knowledge of the game and presence. But if you listen carefully, he has a flair mostly for the obvious. “He saw his lane and ran directly upfield with determination as Alabama running backs do.” Well, yeah that is kind of the deal.

He really really knows tendencies and Xs and Os. There will always be fans closer to the paranoid spectrum who say "Gary hates my team" but I don't think that's true.

I think he was an a plus.

It would drive me batshit when Gary would point out, presnap, that lsu should probably give amari Cooper less room. ….boom. Touchdown.

He knows football.

I’d give him an A-. Other than having to talk around the Bama cock he’s always got in his mouth, he’s great.

I challenge the Gary haters to give me the names of two college football color announcers on television that are better at their jobs than Gary

Let’s see….

Todd Blackledge
Kirk Herbstreit (I tried to dislike Kirk’s commentary, but he actually does a good job)
Joel Klatt
Greg McElroy
Rod Gilmore
Trevor Matich
RG3
Matt Stinchcomb
Dusty Dvoracek

He’s no Todd Blackledge but he is pretty solid most of the time.

RGIII is on the same level as Beth Mowins.

RG3 is turrible for football...but, when he did the NCAA Track and Field Championship this past spring, he was solid.

Nobody more frustrating when trying to guess a replay call, he was literally never right on any of what he was looking at.

X1000 slow mo zoom footage of a guy stepping out of bounds that they’re reviewing, Gary thinks they’re looking at a block in the back in the other side of the field

This is spot on. It can get annoying, but the bar is just so damn low these days. This scenario takes place on any ESPN game not being called by Mike Patrick, and their guys are making sure to let us know their personal feelings on the Red Sox/Yankees matchup from three weeks ago before they even mention there is an actual fricking review taking place.

Yes. I agree. He is slightly better than Gary.

He's a B. He's very knowledgeable, and he communicates that knowledge very well, but he's annoying as frick. He's a harper. The man will harp on a point and beat it to death until you want to strangle him. One of the best examples I can think of was the 2012 SECCG.

Gary leaned into the idea that Barrett Jones was going to struggle with the UGA defensive tackles all game, but Barrett really didn't. He had a great game. However, even though a blind man could see Barrett was doing his part and opening holes for the running backs that put up over 300 yards rushing on the UGA front, he carried that BS narrative throughout the entire game, just because he said it. It was ridiculous on his part.

I dont think he is as much a Bama lover but rather loves the favorite. And Bama is very rarely not the favorite. He did the same thing with Florida when Tebow was there, and did if for LSU in 2019.

Danielson would beat a dead horse to a pulp. I watched the CBS video and listened to the radio.

While his technical analysis can be good, he spends way too much time talking about calls he thinks the officials should have made, sometimes for 4 or 5 plays or more afterwards, and he's frequently wrong about it. He sometimes thinks his take on things is brilliant and you can tell when he does by how much he will repeat himself. You would have thought that Tank Bigsby single handedly lost the Iron Bowl when Jordan Battle pulled him out of bounds. I will not miss him at all.

I prefer to mute most announcers. It's the same as if you're in the stands watching a game. You can see what happens without all their rambling, scripted bullet points, etc. If there's a long delay, I'll punch up the sound to get the details on a penalty, review, etc.

Also: I'm sorry, but Beth Mowens tries way too hard at the top of her lungs, so I mute her as well. And I'm constantly surprised at how often 6-figure announcers of any kind get things wrong: stats, records, pronunciations, etc.
