I'll give you that. Auburns offense is either a shitshow or unstoppable under Gus.

The NFL exec is right. We've got about 7 more months until his buyout drops significantly and we can finally fire this stooge. Enjoy the comedy show while it lasts.

I wish I could disagree, but I’ve been yelling this for years.

Right? Sometimes, it really does look incredible. Then, the next week it looks like they haven't practiced the plays they are running. It's just the definition of inconsistency, which I feel to have a good grasp of, in relation to football.

That and Stidham didn't do his job when he had the chance. Gus can't throw the ball for him. If he knew it all from Baylor then he didn't forget it coming to Auburn.

That's funny, considering Gus' offense is responsible for some of the greatest offenses(2006 Arky, 2010 Auburn, 2013 Auburn) and individual seasons(Darren McFadden, Cam Newton, Tre Mason) in SEC history.

Chip Kelly had a great college offense too. So did Spurrier.

Consider for a moment that what works in college may not translate well to the NFL and that perhaps a former NFL exec is thinking in those terms.

Well, his play calling and player development kind of are.

In October 2012, sportswriter Jason La Canfora reported that the Cleveland Browns were considering Lombardi for their vacancy at General Manager.[10] He was hired for that position five months later.[11] On February 11, 2014, the Browns replaced Lombardi with Ray Farmer

Let me reiterate: it’s not a bad offense in terms of success at the college level (when the right players are in place), but it is bad in terms of player development for the next level. That goes for QB, RB, WR, OL and TE.

If I have said it once, I have said it 1000 times, Auburn needs a good offensive line and either a dominating RB (like Kerryon at the end of 2017) or an absolutely dynamic runner (either a small, Nick Marshall type guy who runs a sub 4.5 or a big Cam Newton type runner).

Nothing else will work. It's sad because I know Bo Nix is a good quarterback, but he will amount to absolutely nothing at Auburn unless they have a new Cadillac/Ronnie Brown/Kerryon.

Auburn would be better off starting Willis or Gatewood and going full out on the spread option/power run game rather than let Malzahn derp up an NFL caliber QB in an offense not built for him.

Most running offenses don't do alot with the QBs. Maybe the NFL exec could help Saban figure it out. Purdue must have the worst defense ever too.

Wow.

Agreed. The line and the Rb are key and we haven't had either the past couple of years, no matter who is under center.

Nix actually appears quicker than Gatewood.

From what I saw in Auburn's spring game Nix certainly has some quickness and a bit of speed. He is definitely good enough to pick up 20 yards if it's there, but I don't know if it is enough to not be a square peg in a round hole in Malzahn's offense.

With Gatewood, I was really thinking more about his size and power running potential. It is certainly a different kind of dynamic in the running game. ETA: especially given Auburns red zone troubles last year.

I agree with all that.

Gus always has red zone problems. He relies on big plays for his scoring and if those aren't coming we are screwed.

This is what Lombardi is alluding to. He is right and we all know it despite the success Gus will have running his offense.

Here is the kicker, kids want to play in the NFL and make as much money as they can. If a player comes to Auburn he can still go to the NFL, but He may not be going to the round he might have in a different system.

Gus can whip the pants off of any team in college football and go undefeated, win the NC, but if he can't get his players drafted higher or develop them for the next level, recruiting will become awfully difficult.

I like Gus a lot and his offense is fun to watch when clicking, and he is a decent human being, but we all know his development of players has been and is an issue.
