The transfer portal makes consistency year to year very difficult to predict.
Good teams can get bad fast, and bad teams good fast.

Too shiny, but I’m biting. Smart obviously qualifies, and yeah beyond that there’s maybe no one else at the moment if we’re not giving Ryan Day any credit.
Yeah, you're probably right when it comes to Kirby .... maybe. I do place him well above Dabo.
Listen, I wasn’t just talking championships ... I was mostly implying old school, hard nosed, football philosophy here. Holtz was that way as well. Woody. Bo.
Kirby is having to deal with modern entitled kids, mostly black kids - but not all by any means, and he's doing it better than most, for sure.
Priorities seem all outta whack right now.
Clemson has seven or eight first and second round draft picks ... and it doesn't show.
Coach O was run out of Red Stick .... for what? How he managed that 2019 team was masterful imho.
Or are we saying it's all about assistants? UTa and Penn State and Clemson have bad staffs?
I dunno ... but something is wonky in CFB these days.

You sound like a northern AP voter, who know their faves will soon run out of average comference opponents who are able to beat them.
I’ve got no dog in the hunt. Closest connection I have to PSU is Boy #2’s SIL just started there this fall. I’ve met her once.

No no no. That’s only reserved for Bama or Georgia. It’s not OSU’s fault they are in the wrong conference.

Preseason Polls ... the "expert" media voters are shite.
Recruit/Portal Rankings ... the talent evaluators are shite.
Media Hype to drive fan interaction/ratings ... it's all about the money.
This. anyone with half a brain knew we weren't the #1 team. We replaced an OL and if there's one position you can just plug and play it's the OL. Combine that with sark's typical shitty offense and you have a recipe for disaster.
It's all about the money and the manning name gets clicks.

quote:I agree. And I’ve recently started wondering if the HC needs to evolve along the lines of the MLB Manager: a “Skipper” that can manage the teams’ emotion, get them dialed into the perfect balance of thinking and operating on instinct, and motivate the hell out of them.

Guys like Kirby, Lanning, and Brent Key appear to do this excellently.
FWIW Others like Kelly and Beamer seem to get it, but just don’t have “it”. Nice guys like Pittman and Napier are dead in the water and it shows.
Get 2 incredible staffs to operate in parallel between 1) personnel and roster management and 2) coordinator-led X’s and O’s scheming, and I think you have the architecture for a top program

Meh. Long road trip against a team that is hard to get up for in the first place, much less while still in a post-Oregon hangover.
Almost every team has a game or two on the schedule where they just come out flat and DGAF. Sometimes you can out-talent them and get by, sometimes you can’t.
If PSU lays another turd next time out, I’ll fully concede the point.
Have you not watched any PSU games over the past few years? This year is no different.

That an indictment on several things.
It’s mostly an indictment of the transfer portal and no sit out period. Teams are finding it hard to build cohesion and chemistry, not to mention players in systems long enough to learn the more complex ones.

This is actually my thought. They won it last year and are winning this year. In a year in which nobody has stepped forward to claim it convincingly, Ohio State should be at #1.

I gave y’all’s offense the benefit of the doubt until what I saw Florida due to Texas. I cannot rule out the idea that if Texas didn’t have Arch or if they managed to score 17 points then that would’ve been game. I’m done hearing the hide the playbook excuse too.

Ohio ST is overated They beat a BAD texASS team as their claim to fame. After that they beat a string of cupcakes.

Who has Mizzou played?
What does that have to do with anything? I dont see anyone making the claim Mizzou should be ranked #1 or even ahead of ohio state.
Are you retarded?

Pre-season polls shouldn't exist at all but, at least they don't have tge impact they used to.

I’d tap the brakes a bit. Until he does it with multiple QB’s, he’s still a potential Dabo (who actually did win with different QB’s
He did it with a 4th rounder who was a walk on. Dabo did it with two first rounders who were top 100 recruits. Smart also was in the NCG in 2017 with a third QB and arguably had the best team in the nation in 2023 with a 4th. He won a CCG in 2024 with a back up QB.
The only thing separating Kirby from those guys is years as a HC.

Not disagreeing with you but this point in the season, no team has yet to play the meat of their schedule

No one has said that.
Ohio State was more conservative on offense because they had a first time starting QB.
Additionally, two OSU drives started at the 2 yard line and another started at the 9. Every offense is going to be a bit more conservative when holding a small lead and inside your own 10. The game dictates the action taken sometimes.
