You were responding to a Hog fan's smack. That's why I brought it up. Regardless, Bryant was on a train to Arkansas to take the job when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He got off at the next station to return to Nashville (he was an assistant at Vanderbilt) and join the Navy.

The only time he got caught cheating was at Texas A&M, and all he did was tell his boosters to meet the competition (Texas, TCU, Rice, ect).

Coach Bryant has been dead for a number of years. Coach Saban is still alive.

I will go with Nick off the basis of that.

Bear for the memories.
Saban for if nothing else getting everyone to stop telling Bama fans they are "living in the past". I haven't heard that in a few years. If anything, every Bama fan is basking in the present.

Bryant 6 national championships in 25 years. Less than 2 losses/year. They are almost the same, Bear slight edge.

Is the thinking still that Major Applewhite will be Saban's hand-picked successor? He'll probably top them both.

Why would Applewhite be Saban's hand-picked successor? He basically told him to get lost after the 2007 season.

Different eras but both great coaches. Both have made huge impact on the game. End of the day, I think Bama is lucky to have two greats.

What will intrigue me is when Saban leaves. Most of the time a coaching departure ends badly. perhaps Saban will ride off into the sunset and start enjoying life on Lake Burton.

Sooner rather than later would suit me!

Different eras, but just to play along, Bryant. By a wide margin. Saban is great and we are blessed to have him, but Bryant was, is and ever shall be the standard all others will be measured against... And for good reason.
