No coach at Alabama will ever escape from under the shadow of Bryant, but Saban deserves much credit -- the SEC is much more competitive than it was during most of Bryant's tenure.

I wouldn't pick one god damn person over Saban right now. Not even coach Bryant. Saban is averaging 11 wins a year. Bryant would equal that at best. Here's a better question. Who would you rather have back in the 1960's-70's? Bear Bryant or current Nick Saban?

Bryant. he was a peer of Dodd, Neyland, Dooley/Butts, Vaught and was just about as powerful as all but Dodd. Dodd had Atlanta. Back in the day, about the only chance you had of getting on TV was playin GA Tech in Atlanta. Television didnt go to Tuscaloosa, Birmingham or Baton Rouge.

There was a brief time when the conference had 5 NC winners: Miles, Saban, Fulmer, Spurrier, Meyer...plus Tubbs who ran the table. (I think this is right).

Both are great coaches. Coach Saban is the closest thing I think we will ever have again in terms of success to Coach Bryant. We are fortunate enough to say we have had 2 of the greatest coaches of all time coach at the University of Alabama.

I was going to choose Coach Bryant, but an auburn fan just told me had died. So I guess I'll stick with Saban.

Serious answer - while these comparisons are fun, you can't overthink it. Coach Bryant is considered by most to be the greatest college football coach in history. His achievements are unmatched. Coach Saban is considered by most at this point to be the best of his era.
We don't know if these two coaches could achieve what the other did if they switched eras. You could argue that Coach Bryant would struggle to motivate today's athlete, or that Coach Saban would not be so successful in an era where his recruiting prowess would be more limited. Who knows?
Paul Bryant achieved more, if you compare careers today. We are incredibly fortunate to have both in our history. It took a horribly dark period to reset my expectations and appreciation so that I can fully enjoy the success today.

I am of the opinion that great coaches would be great in any era. Lombardi, Wooden, Jimmy Johnson and yes even Don Shula. Bear absolutely would be great today.
