One third of that old league ( Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M) is now in the SEC .

That league was started bc Texas couldnt hack it in the old siaa, they couldn’t ever win a conference championship in football so they grabbed a bunch of in state also rans and formed a conference they could dominate

The SWC was a strong conference before the 80s.

How many SIAA championships did Alabama have?

Funny I don’t remember Alabama tucking tail and starting a weak conference they could dominate. Bama left as a charter member of the southern conference which was a precursor for the sec. The conference you’re currently in bc you’re rag tag all Texas conference couldnt cut it. You folded shop and got absorbed by big 8, then proceeded to wreck that conference.

You don't remember that happening in 1920-something? Ok.
Texas was the biggest geographic outlier in a time when teams and fans had to take a train to away games and you wonder why Texas would want to play in the state rather than take a train to Georgia.

Why did it take A&M so long to wake up?

Politics. We wanted to leave with Arkansas.
We really should have been a founding member of the SEC…but politics.

Gene Stallings tried for years but he wasn’t put on the Board of Regents until 2005.

What’s even worse is how they used to get in the CWS. Baseball bids used to be earned by regions. The whole southeastern territory used to only get one bid while the state of Texas and I think New Mexico used to get one bid. That’s why they have so many CWS appearances.

It did cripple Arkansas football, losing constant access to our prime recruiting ground really stung. But we didn't have a choice. The SWC was in a death spiral and playing musical chairs. You really didn't want to be left without a chair.
It is odd how things work out. Ole Miss went to bat for us because we had renewed our rivalry with them and they could attest our facilities were up to par.
Down the road Arkansas did the same thing for A&M.

Not really. Arkansas always shouldve been. Aggies are Texans at heart and not southern

Arkansas shouldn't have left then, but just transfered with the rest into the Big 12.
