The point here should be to get the raw facts. Let the defense attorneys earn their pay after those facts are established.

This. You don’t publicly hire independent investigators to sweep things under the rug. The ship has sailed at that point. You sweep them before you hire the investigators and whatever dirt is found you have to live with.
