Bowl games didn't count in the early 60s.

In 1960 they won the Sugar Bowl and finished the season #2. If the bowl games had counted, they would have finished #1 likely as #1 Minnesota lost their bowl game.

In 1962 Ole Miss went undefeated and won the Sugar Bowl. But they finished #3 as undefeated USC was #1.
