I mean if we're going for money might as well add Clemson.

I don't think FSU adds much and I rather bring UNC for basketball and expanded region access.

Wrong. Frank Broyles was the catalyst for the expansion. At the time the SWC was in serious decline, due in large part to numerous members having probation issues, etc.
Broyles and longtime friend Doug Dickey of Tennessee ( a former Broyles assistant) were instrumental in driving the move. Also, at the time, Broyles felt Texas may have interest in the move, as he was very close friends with Daryl Royal, the former head coach there. When that fell through, the next choice was Florida State. They weren’t too keen, and it’s doubtful UF was thrilled either, so it was settled on South Carolina as the other.
You have to remember, at the time, Arkansas was the most stable and healthy of the Big 3 in the SWC at the time, and had not seen probation issues and bad press. In fact, it was coming off back to back conference titles recently and was doing its best to keep the leagues reputation together. The 1980’s was damaging to the conference, and Broyles had enough.

Except expanding the SECs viewership footprint by 40%.

So much wrong here. Yikes.

I get what OU and Texas bring, what do Clemson and FSU bring? Clemson is a flash in the pan with no new TV markets. FSU hasn't been consistently good in almost 20 years and also doesn't bring new TV markets.

If Miami gave a shite about sports anymore then I could see that. One of the North Carolina or Virginia schools would make sense too. Clemson and FSU don't.

And A&M is 16-0 by an avg margin of over 2 TDs against them since we’ve been here.

yet provided no division titles.

No way does Fla. St. want to play Clemson, UGA, Fla., bama & AU ...just to get to Atlanta. That's an almost automatic 5 losses every yr.

That was what it was about 10 years ago, the landscape has changed and its not even about that a little bit now...its about the domination of the NCAA and College Football. You go get the best you can get no matter the "footprint"

Exactly. Forget footprint. The Brand is the thing now and 'SEC' is the biggest and best out there. And they have their branding iron in the fire ready to use on the best they can get.

Not going to say the Big 12 was a great conference but the Big 2 talk is a bit overkill. Colorado was an absolute juggernaut in the early ‘90s. Oklahoma State was very good in the ‘80s with three years only losing to OU and NU and certainly playing very good OU teams tough.

In 1971, NU, OU, and CU finished #1, 2, 3 in the national polls.

Again not saying it was a tough conference top to bottom but it wasn’t only OU and NU.

Modern day cattle rustling. The best are going to wind up at the SEC ranch.

Lol Ole Miss saying Arkansas doesn’t bring anything.

We’ve been to the SECC game 3 times since being here. How many times OM been?

We’ve won a basketball NC and runner up. OM has one sweet 16 in heir history.

OM brings literally nothing to the SEC

Congrats? Nobody is denying Arkansas has been bad at football since Petrino crashed.

Aggies haven’t won the West since being here and have won nothing.

Awful at basketball and baseball as well

they're not even in the top 20 of most valuable football programs ...

https://reinvestmentnews.com/college-footballs-20-most-valuable-programs-according-to-the-wsj/

quote:

The college football world is abuzz with the potential of conference realignment once again. With name, image, and likeness hitting the sport, as well as the ability to transfer one time without penalty, and the expansion of the College Football Playoff likely, it’s a time of change. Add that to the fact that television deals are going to hit, and that’s why we’re hearing that Texas and Oklahoma are far down the path of leaving the Big 12 and defecting to the land of sweet tea and grits in the SEC.

It got us thinking about the value of a college football program. What if teams were valued much like they are in professional sports out on the open market?

quote:

There are surely some nuances that have changed things a little since this was all done in 2019 as of 2018 numbers, and there hasn’t been another evaluation because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’ll still give you an idea of the value of each program. You can keep it all in mind for when mass chaos ensues because of teams positioning themselves for the future.

So here we go. Here are the 20 most valuable college football teams as assessed late in 2019 by the Wall Street Journal.

20 Michigan State
19 Washington
18 Iowa
17 South Carolina
16 Arkansas
15 Nebraska
14 Wisconsin
13 Penn State
12 Texas A&M
11 Florida
10 Tennessee
9 LSU
8 Auburn
7 Oklahoma
6 Georgia
5 Notre Dame
4 Michigan
3 Alabama
2 Ohio State
1 Texas

Clemson isn’t worth dog shite. This expansion isn’t about ‘good footbaw teams’.
Texas isn’t good at football. They weren’t brought in because of their ability to win football games.

These moves are about the potential to expand the conference’s consumer base.
Texas is in a heavily populated city. They have the potential to be built into a strong brand. SEC games being played in Austin will bring more recognition to the brand.

The SEC’s current high value comes from their monopoly over sports in the southeast. They are trying to expand that monopoly.
