Agreed. I was there IN PERSON for the Tebow jump pass. The LSU fake flip field goal, the ‘97 White Out game, and several others.
It’s an awesome feeling to be able to say “I was there”

There is no place in the south where 90degre temperatures with no shade is fun. It is soo much better watching at home in your own TV in the AC cooking your own food with friends and family. I go to one Bama game a year with my sons in November. That’s it.

It's just too easy to sit on couch and watch it on tv.
* Inexpensive
* No traffic
* No standing in line to pee
* No need for a DD
Too many pros to just sit on a couch

110" projector and AC at my home... vs literally hundreds of dollars and no AC.
Not exactly a hard choice for the middle class...

Empty seats are the new normal in college football
Empty seats, fewer boomers, Gen Z students who really don't care - they'rejust there for the drunken party, higher priced concessions, outrageous seat license and ticket prices, entitled social media savvy Gen Z players who begin their prima donna schtick their sophomore year in HS, millenial and Gen X and Y fans who ... well, nevermind.
There are a lot of reasons why college football stadiums have empty seats these days. It's not just TV. It is many things.

Add one other thing. Comfort in the venue.
I was at Superdome for State-ULL. Seats are small and the rows are jammed together making it a very uncomfortable place to enjoy a football game.
We went to Gillette Stadium a couple of years ago for the State-UMASS game and you talk about nice. The Patriots have done it right. Seats are extra large and the room between rows is spacious. You can actually stand and walk out of your row without disturbing the others fans in their seats. That spoiled me.
So my recommendation is to drop capacity by making seats larger. I know it is impossible to make the rows wider now but at least make the seats wider would be a big step in the right direction.

Everyone has been sleeping on the tax changes eliminating the deduction on seat donations.
Schools just moved it to tailgating spots which are 82% deductible.

I got bama duke tickets on Friday - 3row of the upper deck on the 50 do $25 each. I wanted to check out the new stadium and figured it might be the cheapest ticket I’d see in a while. I used to have season tickets but it just got to be to much work to make a 4 hour trip down to town every other week.

Maybe the schools shouldn't be so fricking greedy when it comes to the people they want to sit in their stadiums?

Yeah. Florida has been really good since the Charlie Pell era.
But you know a lot of us can go to the stadium and see something like what Tennessee had last Saturday.
Doesn't sound so good to say "I was there" in that situation.
Part of the problem is there really is no joy in just watching a game anymore (if there ever was). There is only joy in watching a victory, and a decisive one so you can pad your resume for the season and whatever bowl/playoff thing you are lobbying for.
I guess a great game, with big plays, that goes back and forth between two heavyweights is great, win or lose.
But how often does that happen?
As it stands now, unless you go to the Stadium and watch Georgia State get crushed 56-0, the game was a waste.
Because face it, in the SEC now we aren't playing to go to Atlanta, or win the SEC. And who cares about the Sugar Bowl.
It's all about qualifying for the playoff. Because nothing else matters really. You don't do that, and frankly bowl games are kind of a waste. Often you get a crappy location, or too far off. Opponent no one cares about, or that may mudhole you.
In a real sense, if you don't qualify for the playoff, you might as well just stay home and let your coaching staff make that final push recruiting. Eh, that would have made more sense prior to the early signing period though.

The modern slacker process.
While the schools and their AD's have sold their souls to increasing prices that only fat cats and corporate folks can afford - which means the loyal fans and their families are getting priced out. The roots of college sports is based on long term fan support through good and bad times that are passed down as rites of passage by friends and family. This is the biggest cost in both direct attendance drops for the live event and the more intangible drops that occur over time as current fans die off and are not replaced by their children and grandchildren.
Here are some of the contrasts...
Live - the fan is in control of what they see
TV - the fan sees only what the producer in the booth wants them to see
Live - all 5 senses are engaged
TV - Touch, Taste, and Smell are lost, while Sight and Sound are controlled
Live - Fosters communication skills with people you may not know otherwise
TV - You are mostly by yourself (like masturbation) and not others
Live - Gets you outside and gets you some exercise
TV - Couch potato and puts on the pounds from inactivity

Biggest thing are the stupid fees all schools charge for tickets now. It used to be CFB was a pretty good deal in relation to NFL tickets but almost seems like the opposite

I go to fewer games now than I used to. Mainly it's the heat. I'll always go to night games. Always. But goddamn it's hot in the Swamp. Even shaded sections are pretty brutal. Spending 40 bucks on water is always fun too.
I try to make it to the big games. But going to watch a noon game that we should win by 50 just doesnt have the appeal to me anymore.

frick those little seats. I'm 192 lbs and being stuck in one of those for 3 hrs isn't my definition of fun.

Look at the cost of attending, and the availability of watching from home in high def. Easy choice for me as I've gotten older.

Yep, and when your game is on break, you can switch to a few others to tune into.

I fear for the long term health of the sport when hard core fans posting on a site called “SEC RANT” are complaining about how what a hassle it is to attend a college football game.
What must the casual fan be thinking?
