Yeah, but we had a shot to make the CFP that year. We were 10-1 with a tough loss to Bama on their home field.
Big game Dan, indeed. He never won one.

I still think that even with a big victory over us that they would've put one of the big 12 schools or Ohio State in over State simply to avoid two SEC schools. The only reason they did in 2017 is because the other school was Alabama.

I don't disagree, but we were in the discussion, which was my point.

I was at the 1997 game. As has been discussed there was a pre-game fight and it was a doozy. It took a large amount of Mississippi Highway patrol officers to get the teams separated. Best I remember Deuce McCallister got the worst of it in his portion of the fight. State led most of the game and late in the 4th quarter OM scored and Tuberville elected to go for 2 trailing 14-13. Patridge to Peterson for 2 pt conversion was good. OM defense held and won 15-14. For pure hatred, animosity and an exciting ending this one tops my list!

I'll give him the LSU and Auburn games from that year. A&M was horribly overrated and fell off the cliff at the end of that year.
Maybe the better way of putting it is that he could never win the biggest game of the year. That Auburn game was big, but it wasn't as big as the Alabama or Ole Miss games.

Presently my wife and I are planing to spend two nights at The Alluvian Hotel in Greenwood amd one night in Clarksdale. They do not give the rooms away at The Alluvian, do you know if it is worth the expense?

Actually one of our big lineman, Wesley something i believe took his helmet off and Deuce Miles Garretted his arse. Dumb arse for taking the helmet off.
Oh and Go to Hell Ole Miss I hate y’all with the fire of a thousand suns.

You really think an 8-3 State team with losses to Southern Miss and Missouri in Jackson would have been selected by the Cotton Bowl over a 9-1-1 SEC Co-Champ Alabama --who had beaten State?

Well if Alabama can claim the 1941 national championship, anything can happen.

That would be joshua.
yatesdog has a lot of flaws, but bet welching isn’t one of them.

Correction:
It was Wes Shivers. From Brandon, played for the Falcons for a bit then MMA. He was a recruit in street clothes on the sideline when Duece hit him with his helmet. Bleed everywhere. Way to go Douche.

It was Wes Shivers and he was just a recruit and still in HS at the time. Deuce hit him with his helmet and Wes was bleeding profusely from his forehead.

Well, admittedly, my memory isn't as good as it used to be. Just seems I thought I remembered Duece on the ground getting kicked by 2 State players. May not have been Deuce. And by the way, never hated State until Mullen.

It was possible. But we were 4 headed into that game and had played the toughest schedule in the nation.

Again, chance. Different era. The Cotton Bowl wanted State that year. Alabama had played in the Cotton the year before.

Picking back up on interesting stories. As I mentioned in the 2nd post on page 1, the Egg Bowl turned in 1973 when State hired Bob Tyler. Coach Tyler had parlayed back to back HS State Championship (1966-1967) teams at Meridian High into a gig at OM. Later in 1970 retiring Coach Vaught wanted Tyler to be the new HC at OM. He was outmaneuvered by the Brewer Brothers. Tyler moved on and was later hired by State.
He had son named Breck Tyler who played for his Dad at State in 1977-1978 and then transferred to Ole Miss after the 1978 season when his Dad was replaced at State. He was then a part of the Ole Miss team in 1980-1981. There were no hard feelings at State and he was still great friends with all players.
Unfortunately, in the 1980 Egg Bowl, Tyler suffered a gruesome injury (torn ligament and a broken ankle) from a clean tackle.
The interesting thing was it was his former State teammates who carried him off the field. He eventually recovered and was fine from the injury.
However he is probably one of the few if any player that played two years for each team in his college career. He was 2-2 in Egg Bowls (1-1 for each school).

my first Egg Bowl was in 2007 when we were down by 14 with 8 minutes left. Derek Pegues grabbed a pick 6 then Adam Carlson (from Gulfport) hit the 47 yd game winner. It was Crooms greatest season.
The replay of that game is on SEC Network right now.
