You operate under the presumption that people IN Alabama like him. That is false.
The people of Alabama made this guys career.
I don't think it really matters if he's liked or not but he is popular.

Yeah...I find it funny that people fail to acknowledge this. Everyone claims to hate the guy and yet many of us tune in at 3 PM ET to watch his show on the SEC Network. If he wasn't popular or good at what he did, he'd still be a relatively unknown sports journalist with a local radio show.

I used to listen a lot. And still sometimes do. No NFL. And no NBA. That works for me.

I agree and disagree with this. I was one of those that used to read his column in the Birmingham News in the early 80's when I was a student. I don't remember the year, but at some point after he started his radio show (don't remember the year), his show was a must listen to. Even though I didn't like him then, I loved the interaction of all of the fans. It was MUST HEAR radio in the late 80's-early 90's on Fridays in the Fall.
At some point, he started using the "hired" callers as someone here mentioned earlier. It started to become too obvious.
I know it was legitimate as early as 1991 because my now ex-wife got into a 20 minute argument with him on the air because he was trolling Auburn when he said we didn't have any nice restaurants. He wouldn't let it go and eventually my ex snapped...which was funny since she never attended Auburn, but we met when I was a junior and were married 16 years with two kids (still on good terms FWIW).
Anyways, I would say the argument was probably a tie. She put up a passionate argument out of loyalty, but, despite my passion for all things Auburn, I can also be objective at times. It was a tough argument...but she put up an incredible fight. I always told her that she defended Auburn (on that subject) way better than I ever could have. Anyways, he was the douchebag that I always thought he was.
I can honestly say I've never watch his show on the SEC Network and I've only watch very little of his segments on the early Saturday morning show (SEC Nation I think).
Just not a fan, but do respect how he used being a douchebag to become a millionaire.
TL/DR....Finebaum is a douchebag.

We Vols have a love/hate relationship with Paul since he is a UT grad.
ManyVol fans think he kisses the conference and especially Alabama’s backside.
To me, I think he lucked into a great career on very meager talent and uses crazy redneck callers as his shtick.

For some reason he admired the Bear
As a lowly newspaper writer he broke the story that put Bama on probation.
He called it like it is with Bama back when it was a circus.
He's always admired Saban probably because Saban was one of the few that would call him out.
Most people work for a living and don't listen or watch his show in that time slot anyway. It gives him four hours to vent all things SEC football. The sad thing is he doesn't even pretend to cover the other sports in the off season. At least he's off SEC Nation.

For the last few years, his listeners seem to be purely LSU fans.

The Finebaum Show was great entertainment in the 2000s. It was like Alabama's own little Jerry Springer and nobody else really knew or cared and it was all centered on Alabama and Auburn. The callers were legit crazy people and the inside jokes of the show were pretty hysterical. Finebaum knew exactly when to turn the screws on Alabama/Auburn and get everyone riled up. He was a puppetmaster.
Once that whole thing went regional then national it became like the Office post-Steve Carrell. Then they got him on national ESPN stuff and he started giving opinions on political/sports issues and the whole thing just went off the rails.

Like all Sports talking heads he has good points and flat out idiotic comments. He's at a point in his career now that he's a commodity rather than some low-level swinging dick trying to make a name for himself. All of his positions now are to protect his product and the SEC network.

I think his deadpan reactions and responses to some of the callers are priceless.

I don’t mind him but the Hooterville crowd who calls in are terrible.
I admit when he was a pure radio host in Alabama, did not like him, I fell for the he is an Alabama homer. Some rationale Alabama fans always said look he is a Tennessee Alum and fan and he plays the Alabama card if they are doing well to stoke the Auburn guys and if Auburn is doing well the same to stoke the Bama guys. In other words, Finebaum understood how to run a sports talk radio show.
But since he has been on the SEC Network, He has been pro-SEC and in fact, when TENN looked like they were going down in flames last year, I saw him get pretty emotional about it and I think he even said look it hurts me to see what TENN is going through as it is my school.
This summer, I watched him more than I probably ever had as he has had great guests on every day going back when Football players and coaches could report back to SEC campuses and has down a great job with the entire are we going to have football or not.
Now some of the callers are to quote General McAuliffe of the 101st Airborne at Bastogne during Batte of the Bulge in response to a German request for surrender "Aw nutts."
