Always found it interesting that the band that played Dixie would then paradoxically spell out USA during the course of a game.

I always find it interesting that damnyankees care so much about telling us what music we should listen to, how we should act, who we let into our bathrooms, and generally what the people of the South should do and think. Question: does fear of a 1850s song, "Dixie," and outrage about it cause you to feel the need for a safe space and a hug? ... in other words, shouldn't this be on the Missouri board?

Uhhhhh... you DO know that after the war the country was re-united, the Confederates were all pardoned, they were all made US citizens and entitled to veteran, and the monuments erected 50 years later were monuments to AMERICAN soldiers regardless of side during the late unpleasantness?

You ARE aware, aren't you, of numerous speech references such as: "With malice toward none, with charity for all, ... to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations." (Lincoln 2nd Ig. address)

You do know that "the song, was a favorite of President Abraham Lincoln; he had it played at some of his political rallies and at the announcement of General Robert E. Lee's surrender." (see Wikipedia). You are aware that "Dixie" was written by a Yankee and was explicit favorite of black minstrels?

Oh you don't know that?

Oh well, political correctness, gay and trans gender rights, etc., is more important than knowing anything about Southern history. Guess the South must undergo a second occupation and reconstruction 175 years after the war is over for the sin of not giving a shite about the North-west coast obsession with an Orwellian Brave New World.

We played Elvis' America trilogy after games a few years back but IIRC there was copyright infringement stuff and we had to quit. Nobody stayed in the stadium for it anyway.

Connotations of the song aside, this has to kind of suck. I remember when we got a new band director a few years ago and he changed up the pre-game, deleting one song and adding a new one. It pissed me off, because the order and songs had been the same since I was a little kid. It just threw the whole damned thing off for me.

Luckily we got a new band director with ties to the school who switched it back the next year.

American soldiers that did what? Fought against the US.

Again, this isn't a debate about why the war started or why each individual solider was on the battlefield but fought against the US they did and fought hard.

You can't actually be naive enough to think Confederate statues, put in place so long after the war as you mentioned were some pro American move do you?

And yes, I do know all that about Lincoln and its origins (which originally had blackface when performed by the way)

Like I said, I actually like the song. But it was a de facto anthem of a country that was a great enemy of the US, like it or not.

I agree that what they did was stupid. However if all they did was:

quote:

put a noose around James Merediths statues neck

and

quote:

And an old Georgia state flag

and they had to:

quote:

plead guilty to federal hate charges

That is a total crock of shite.

Again, it was absolutely juvenile but under no circumstances would that have been the outcome if you reverse all the demographics; nor should it have been.

Missouri came in 3rd in number of battles in a State during the Civil War. And about 5 years before Ft. Sumter, Missouri was already engaged in violent conflicts. The Missouri Compromise and it's breach was among the earliest catalysts to the Civil War.

When you put a noose around THE MAN WHO INTEGRATED THE UNIVERSITY and who caused JFK to call in the national guard because of his enrollment you should expect some repercussions. They had to know what would be the consequences. Did they think that a university with our racial past was going to slap them on the wrist?

I up-voted.

That's simply a matter of paying for a mechanical license. Your band likely does it for everything they play that isn't public domain. Churches do it for songs played during their services.

Politicians do it all the time for songs they want to use - and most of the time the artist doesn't even have the right to make a candidate stop using a song even if the artist isn't a supporter.

Yeah. The funny part is they named themselves the Black Bears and no one calling them racists seen the sarcasm.

Missouri spawned William Clarke Quantrill and the James/Younger gang. Those guys burned Lawrence, Kansas to the ground and were still killing Yankees long after the war ended.

When they played it at the Sugar Bowl this year my wife kind of freaked out and thought it was a big deal.

It's a nice tune that has a bad rap.

Sort of like Lucifer is a nice name that has a bad rap.

If the story is to be believed they didn't play it during the Sugar bowl. I personally can't remember. I was jammed and I was watching my team win the sugar bowl.

My bad. I went to the pre-party in one of the big Sugar Bowl conference rooms and they had the small band play it with the cheerleaders.

Sorry I don't have the terminology down. First time I had ever been to the Sugar Bowl.
