My only firsthand experience with dislocations is my older boy, whose shoulder has popped in and out a few times.

With a dislocated finger, is it reasonable to wonder if Smith could have gone back in if needed? I remember Roger Staubach talking about popping his back into place during a game and going back in, but he also ended up with a hand that looks like this:

If he was needed, maybe.

He wasn't needed. We were up 3 scores at that point as I recall.

You could tell the offense missed him. They were effective but not as explosive.

I actually think Mac deserved the MVP with the way he executed the offense after DeVonta went out.

I remember when Ronnie Lott cut his broken finger off to play the rest of the game.

UPDATE:
National Championship record for most receiving yards:

LSU's Ja'Marr Chase holds the record for championship game receiving yards with 221—set just last year—which left Smith shy by just six yards.

Awww - too bad!

I think it just depends on the dislocation. Probably also a little tougher for a WR than some other positions.

Dr Andrew’s just said on the radio that they tried to pop it in and he wanted to play but that it was more complex than a typical dislocation - and that it won’t affect him moving forward.

one of the alabama radio guys was on our local espn affiliate and said they had a hard time reducing it (hence why he was in the tent a while). ended up getting an x-ray to confirm reduction. he wanted to go back in but wasn't needed as already mentioned

I assumed it was more than a typical dislocation the way they wrapped his hand up after the fact.

Sometimes you can pop them back in and it's alright. Sometimes you have the potential for nerve damage/circulation issues if it's more complicated. Considering how valuable his hands are at this point, makes sense to pull him out.

What you're seeing with Staubach's hand is arthritis which was probably made worse from injuries. My hands look like something out of a horror movie.

At other positions maybe - can't imagine a dislocated finger is very easy to play receiver with.

I had my pinky finger dislocated in HS. I thought I had broken it the way it looked, but my coach just pulled it back in place. Fluid filled the joint which made it hard to bend , but no pain. Joint remained big for years and still gives me problems.

Rashad Johnson had the tip of his finger ripped off during a game and still played

Smith is also pretty exclusively a "hands" guy versus a receiver that catches with their body, which I'm sure adds to that as well.

I think they said they had trouble getting it back in place. If they could have immediately fixed it, then it would have been possible for him to continue.

The man is worth over half a billion dollars.

He probably bought new ones.
