they ended up not playing the best team in the country bc only 4 teams could make the playoff.

OMFG, I hate college football playoffs.

So now that we have what everyone wanted, we end up with the champions not being the best team.

Everybody will obviously credit Auburn's 2010 NC to Cam Newton but that Auburn team had a TON of seniors on it that were solid but not NFL worthy guys who had a lot of leadership and experience. Cam provided the spark plugs but there were 25 guys you wouldn't remember who built the car and made the engine run.

Bennett had over 4000 yds passing in 2022, surrounded by all sorts of NFL talent.

"elite" QBs don't play 17 seasons of college ball and get drafted on day 3 of the draft.

Yep - especially up front on offense. That was a very good offensive line (same story in 2013).

The new thing has been dilution of talent. With NIL and mainly the portal, you can't stack players like you could before.

Michigan was a very good team like about 7 teams in CFB this season.

There were probably 3 or 4 teams that could have beaten Michigan this year for the NC.

Michigan is not a team that is head and shoulders above anyone. But, they did earn it on the field.

I think that's the formula going forward in a 12 team playoff: earn it on the field. And that's not really a formula is it? There is no formula really.

Georgia may have been the best team in the country, credit to Alabama for putting together a plan to win that game.

That was Nick Saban’s farewell present to all of us. Took both Bama and UGA out with his luck that finally ran out at the perfect time.

I think coaching is going to be more important than ever at schools that can't afford to buy the highest talent. I also think schools that can enhance 4 star talent may do better than schools with a bunch of ego driven 5 stars.

Michigan just broke the record for the number of players invited to the NFL combine (previously held by LSU after the 2019 season). They had elite talent.

Again, that's talent in one draft class.

Their actual roster this year won't be among the top 20 in terms of drafted players from a single season's roster. Probably not among the top 50.

UGA had 15 players drfted in the 2022 NFL draft and 10 in 2023. They'll probably have another 5-10 this season.

That's 30-35 players from the 2021 UGA football team being drafted. It wasn't all in one year as they weren't all seniors at the same time like the way Michigan is set up.

To be honest, Bama probably has 3-5 rosters where the total players drafted were even higher than UGA's 2021 team. Michigan isn't getting close to that.

Michigan had a huge number of seniors. Many of them are good players and will be drafted, but if their roster was spread over multiple classes instead of being all in their senior class this past year, they likely wouldn't have been in the playoffs and wouldn't have a noticeable number of draft picks this year.

Michigan had 44 seniors on their roster this season. For comparison, UGA had 15.

I think every team would like seniors to come back. Nothing ground breaking here

It wasn't just seniors coming back. They had a ton of guys who not only red-shirted but also used the extra Covid year. A ton of sixth and sventh year players.

To a degree, but the little engine that could just moved to L.A.

McCarthy is the only sure fire first round pick,

He's atrocious. Any GM that drafts him round 1 should be summarily fired. His accuracy is terrible. In the NFL, successful QBs get the ball out, have elite downfield placement and protect the football. McCarthy has trouble hitting hitches.

He just happened to play with a stacked team, a great RB and the weakest schedule for a national champion since 1984 BYU.

Michigan was the beneficiary of having a bunch of 5/6 yr players thanks to Covid. Now that the Covid expansion is expiring the teams that recruit NFL talent will be rebuilding every 3 yrs or so because the transfer portal allows players to transfer infinitely. So teams will develop kids for two yrs and they hit the portal if they get a better offer from a university. That’s the game now.

Michigan also had a very easy schedule until November. I honestly thought it was going to backfire since it helps to be tested before the playoffs. But they stayed healthy, beat Penn State and Ohio State and won two playoff games.

So having 44 seniors, playing 9 scrub teams, and cheating proved to be a good recipe for success. But it's a tough recipe to replicate in this era of NIL/portal.

This is going to spill over into the new conference championship guarantee of a first round bye.

This is how Clemson won titles with Deshaun Watson/Trevor Lawrence

This is so disingenuous Clemson had absolutely stacked defenses and skill players on offense all over the place.

Venables was a good coordinator though.
