I saw a post on reddit that said several teams, during the history of the poll went from unranked to top 10.

Considering how the AP only ranked 10 teams in some years, I bet they're right!

Consider alternate options.

For comparison purposes, when was the last time a team ranked like say 23-25 or unranked beat up a top 10 team and how far did they move up week 1?

Genuinely curious, cant remember the last time that happened

Easy.

In 2008, Clemson was preseason #9 and Bama was #24. After Bama won we jumped to #13 and Clemson dropped out of the polls.

The AP obviously hates Bama moreso than they do LSU.

I can't figure out if you're a 16 year old who just discovered this site or a 65 year old who just discovered this site. You'll improve in time, I'm sure of it.

Typical overreaction

It went from LSU sucks so bad to LSU is one of the best teams in the country because they beat an overrated Miami team. Truth is probably somewhere in between.

Yeah I agree. This is still an 8-4ish type team. Maybe beat 1 of Auburn, UGA, and Bama then drop a game somewhere else, probably to Florida or Moo State.

I think it's a setup for a high ranking game between the AU and LSU

I believe this plays a huge part. I'm not saying the poll voters themselves are directly monetarily incentivized to do so in an orchestrated systematic fashion, but I'm sure they're cognizant of fact that doing so:

* Raises the interest level in said game. Parties naturally grateful for this include (but are not limited to): the network airing the game, Vegas, both participants, anyone with either participant on their schedule.

* Early season rankings aren't that important, and they're expected to be less accurate. Thus, even when the voters know damn well they're overrating a team to fabricate a high profile match-up, they know they'll be dropping them next week anyhow... and no one will give a shite because the error will get washed out by the mid season and those polls' roles handled by the committee.

As long as these shenanigans are restricted to the first 2 weekends, I don't think it really causes a problem. The biggest losers in this phenomenon would be talented teams fattening up on cupcakes getting underrated; in my opinion they deserve it.

Besides, picking out frauds early in the season is almost as much fun as watching a seriously good football. The later is awe inspiring, while the former can the opening of a Cinderella story or Yackety-Sax worthy hilarious.

I don’t think an AP voter puts that level of thought into it but maybe I’m wrong

First of all, polls serve no purpose prior to week 6 of the season. You have a bunch of idiots that are making at best, guesses, as to what is going to happen.

I don't agree with LSU's jump any more than I agree with LSU's original ranking, that's why there should be a wait and see method.

Sure picking the top four or five is a no brainer, a monkey could do it. Lets see, who has played for the last handful of championships, BAMA, Clemson, OSU, OU....those teams continue to recruit well and have great coaches. The next batch of 10-20 is where things get really hard.

Like weather men, the idiots who make polls aren't accountable for being wrong, they take all the credit in the world for being right, but when they are wrong there is NO repercussions.

LSU has had just as successful if not better recruiting then anybody not in the top 5. It should come as no surprise to intelligent people that they were going to be good. Miami's recruiting has been in the low teens for ever and have a coach that was run out of town for not being able to deliver the goods.

LSU shouldn't get accolades for beating #8 because UM wasn't #8 in the country, not even close.

Give it 6 weeks and look at the full body of work. There should be a SMALL group of people who HAVE to watch ALL the games and have to make the decision of who's where and on a week to week basis. They would earn points and the more they are right, the more weighting their vote gets, if they are wrong on numerous picks they votes get less weighting the following week.
