Hard to believe he was 75. Damn, I'm getting old.

RIP, Coach!

That was a roller coaster ride. Coach Fran drove home just how important it is to get a good fit at your particular school. He wasn't a bad coach or person, just out of his comfort zone at BAMA.

Probably going on probation while he was there didn’t help things.

He was out of his comfort zone facing NCAA punishment that he had nothing to do with, but would have to navigate.

The administration screwed that up as much as anything in their representation of the severity of things to Fran. Relations grew very cold after the bomb dropped, and reality of the situation hit home.

"Hold the rope." That was his anthem for the players not to transfer. It was a free ride back then to immediately play somewhere else. Not ONE BAMA player left the program. They held the rope. Guess who the only guy was that turned it loose?

2 years short of that Oklahoma score. RIP in peace, Coach.

I honestly thought the man was older than that. He got a raw deal with the punishment he had to deal with when he wasn't the guilty party

Explain how going 10-3 in 2002 was just too much for a head coach to handle?

That was before the scholarship limits really kicked Alabama’s arse.

That team went 10-3, should’ve been in Atlanta and ended the season with a regular season game in Hawaii because of the bullshite.

Under modern transfer rules, they all would have jumped ship. Don't fool yourself.

He walked into a pending investigation under the guise that it wouldn't be that bad. It was almost the death penalty. Moore had admitted the fault in admin in fully anticipating that and relaying it during the hire. If I recall all correctly, Fran wanted some sort of assurance as the situation was dire and materially different than it was expected to be when he signed a contract. Bama waited until year 2 of success before really getting behind supporting him. But, relations had already broken down by that point.

No fault of anyone IMO. Just the cost of doing business. It all worked out for the best. Fran went elsewhere for more money and a better personal situation for himself and Bama slogged through their issues and ended up with Saban.

AHM answered it already. That and the uphill battle in recruiting the sanctions would cause moving forward on top of the reduced scholarships would mean a long term difficult situation that simply wasn't what he signed up for.

He knew it would severely impact performance and he had no real assurance or protection against that once the fans would have started calling for his head regardless of the situation

So? Mike Shula was a downgrade, and he still had a 10-win season on probation. If you feel at a disadvantage because of talent, I suggest Fran not get on a plane or in a hurry for College Station.

If Coach Fran said today it just wasn't a good fit, who could blame him? Sometimes you don't know until you get there. Which simply brings me back to my first point: some jobs just aren't for everyone. BAMA wasn't for Coach Fran.

The same BAMA fans that put up with Mike Shula's Jumbo Package for 4 years? Baloney.

I always considered him a better person than a coach. Irrespective of that, RIP Coach.

He was a solid coach. Feels like he torpedoed his career bolting for A&M. Was trying to dodge the NCAA sanctions but before he left Alabama fans were very pleased with him following the disastrous Dubose era. We were pissed at him leaving because everyone thought he was doing a good job.
