The federal court hearing is in regards to all teams in the SEC, LSU is simply the named entity.
The point of this hearing is to give the SEC the power to enforce rules that the NCAA has no power to enforce.
It was going to happen today no matter what.
Even if LSU said they would fire Kiffin, this still would have gone ahead.
It is a defining moment for conferences within sports.
Its purpose is to answer the question of if the NCAA cannot enforce these rules, does the SEC and other conferences have the power to?

With the alternative being what? Schools decide selectively which rules to follow and intervene as needed with courts? Its completely unsustainable absent federal legislation which seems likely to fail currently.
You've correctly identified that they are seeking to assert control over member schools, you just see it as a negative rather than a necessary evil as every other member institution has determined.
