There are rumors that in the summer of 09 when the Pac-16 was almost a reality, that after Colorado and Nebraska left, OU had an offer to the SEC with A&M, but neither took Slive up on the offer. A&M was interested obviously and circled back around, but OU claimed that they wanted the Pac-16 because of academics and the SEC couldn't do that. Then A&M and Mizzou left the following year taking half the remaining AAU schools, and the Big 12 replaced them with two laughably bad schools in WVU and TCU.
Now, I don't think academics ever actually mattered since OU isn't some scholarly hot bed, they just used that as a reason to hold on to the ten team version of the Big 12 that included A&M/Mizzou.
It is funny that when they reached out to create a Pac-14 two years later, they were rebuked because of academics though.
