Crowning the SEC champ after the SECCG goes away

Seems like only a matter of time. Kirby parroted what the Alabama AD said about getting rid of the game the other day.
The old days of co-champs was sort of weak. Last season there would have been 3 co-champs like there was in 1989.
But at the same time wonky tiebreakers with strength of opponents to determine the champion would be weak too.
It's all subjective and who the frick really knows, but I think the tiebreakers should be:
1) Head to head
2) highest ranked team in the final CFP poll
3) That's it

The problem is there are too many teams so finishing at the top is now a function of schedule.
A 10 team SEC people were playing 7-8 teams so the team at the top was almost certainly the best.
You can now have a schedule that plays exclusive the bottom half of the conference.
Conference is too big

Have SEC championship game ticket sales declined?
Does ABC not want the game?

It’s just going to be the top 40 programs in their own league eventually.
And ironically the league will be broken down into divisions of 10 teams lmao.

Yeah it doesn't matter what the coaches say. They aren't signing the checks. The networks do, and the conference championship games are the biggest ratings games of the non-CFP

Without divisions and a championship game, it’s co-champs. Just like in 1989, when there was a 3-way tie.

One champ and 3 co-champs is OK with me.
That's 4 teams that make the playoffs and don't lose their QB or best WR - LB in a game that's super great, but unnecessary.
Let them play in the playoffs.
This is just my opinion. - Winning the SEC playoff game doesn't put you in the playoff game. Years ago it might. The SEC Champ vs the Big Champ, but not anymore.

How do you know what it is if the it hasn't happened yet?

^follow the money.
IF they can monetize it by cancelling it they will.
Currently the game provides cash flow to the SEC.
I guess they could replace it with a game in Indianapolis featuring Big 10 4 seed versus SEC 5 seed, and a game in ATL featuring SEC 4 versus Big 10 5 seed.
Whatever they do, they will make it where it makes them more money.

Fine with this:
This is way too subjective.
Theoretically two teams who didnt’t play each other could have the SEC championship decided based on what someone in a hotel room in November decides. I would rather “co champs” than that

I don't think that's illogical. Head to head record would probably make sense as the only tiebreaker. Last season would've made Alabama the SEC champ (Alabama 1-0, Georgia, 1-1, Ole Miss 0-1). But it's like OPs said, the conference is too big now, and it'd only be a matter of time before 2 teams finish tied for the best conference record and they didn't play each other that season. At that point there would be co-champs if head to head record was the only tiebraker.

Using rankings is idiotic, because whoever was ranked highest in preseason polls will end up higher in the cfp polls too.

Probably break the ties by revenue generated.

I read this 4 times and still don't follow, unless you're setting yourself up for a rant about how stupid polls are and how much you don't like polls. What happens if one of the teams has aout of conference loss? Ole MIss started 13 places below Alabama in the preseason AP poll and finished ahead of Alabama in the final CFP poll.

I figured it out from an LSU standpoint (since I'm an LSU fan); in the first schedule (2024 and 2025, since they were the same):
LSU, Texas and Tennessee all did not play each other. They were all ranked teams (didn't pan out, but that's not the point). So in theory, all three could have gone 12-0... and since all were ranked it wouldn't have been TOO shocking. Texas and Tennessee each made the playoff once, and LSU fired Kelly because they didn't.
Sooner or later, that scenario will play out, and we would have to decide who gets left out from Atlanta. But nobody really cares if they win the SEC, they want to win the Natty. *Trust me as an LSU fan, 2011 was very bitter. Going 13-0 and winning in Atlanta doesn't ease the pain of losing the playoff. None of the other SEC fans care that LSU won the conference. LSU doesn't care either, they lost to Bama when it counted most.

It would be a lot better if the SEC Conference administrators, in Birmingham, just decide which team is the SEC Champion at the end of the season.
That's the only really fair way to do it.

Bama absolutely deserved to make the CFP, but wanted them left out, to force the rid of the championship games.
No, because I remember the year OU, TU, and TX tech finished 7-1 in division, and was decided by BCS Rankings, and they are probably better than human bias.

If there is a head to head winner, then that should be the only tie breaker.
If not, just go with Co-Champs. Sadly, the meaningfulness of being the SEC Champion is going to be reduced even more when the CFP expands, again.
