Some very quick searching indicates that 4 and 5 star hotels in Atlanta run, on average $341 a night on random weekends. The same rooms run $596 a night in Nashville. Its even worse for 3 star (Hampton Inn types). They run about $149 in Atlanta and about $386 in Nashville. The reason is there are simply far more rooms in Atlanta than there is in Nashville. Metro Nashville is home to 2 million people. Metro Atlanta is home to 6 million. Atlanta is 3 times bigger than Nashville, had far more flights at better fares and far more rooms at better rates.
According to US News and Reports...Nashville is a cheaper airport to fly in and out of than Atlanta. LINK

Ranking the major Metro Areas in SEC States by the US News and Report study (average fare inflation adjusted for Q3 2024) that were mentioned earlier in this thread:

Atlanta, GA - 396.12
Nashville, TN - $341.94
Houston, TX - $341.28
Tampa, FL - $326.76
Dallas, TX - $323.76
Orlando, FL - $269.61
New Orleans, LA - $232.50

Says the poster that lives in Birmingham.

Atlanta is dumb enough to run two major freeways, 75 and 85, together right in downtown making impossible to drive through.

The Downtown Connector predates the Interstate Highway System. Even if the eastside freeway connecting GA 400 and I-675 had been built, it would not have solved the traffic issue.

Not sure where to Nashville would host it.

Music City Center? It's not too far from the new stadium site.

I couldn't remember how big it is but most likely. Still it is on the other side of the river from the stadium. Bit a horrible walk for fans but you won't have the team walks go through there unless they go early and then get back on a bus to ride over to the stadium.

I imagine most southerners don’t want to deal with outdoor December temperatures in Tennessee

They’ll keep it in the Atlanta dome, and afterall why not?

Yes - Nashville is centrally located and it has joined the first tier of cities - Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas. Birmingham is nowhere near first tier and never will be.

These are questionable stats imo. Notice how on the link, Boston & NY are cheaper?? I would think a higher avg. fare would simply indicate a higher % of international & long distance flights that are, of course, going to be more expensive

Take out Dallas/Houston area and rotate the rest. Dallas/Houston isn’t SEC territory.
I was thinking for Arky, UT, OU and Mizzou regional representation.

I lol’d at myself for Birmingham also.

In terms of just places to see a game, Nashville is #1 but Bham is right there with the others. NO used to be my fav city in the US before it became Haiti

Nashville has always been a cheap city to fly into because it is a Southwest Hub city.

I was planning a trip to the UGA-Vandy game year before last in Nashville and shitcanned the whole idea because any hotel/bnb in an area you'd want to stay at was insanely priced, double what you'd pay for an event weekend in Athens or ATL.

That doesn't explain why Boston is even cheaper, nor why one airport in NYC is $300 & the other is $400.

These stats don't appear to be adjusted in any way, just a general average that makes them deceptive imo

You don't think a big part of the room prices is that Nashville is one of the biggest tourism cities while Atlanta is just your typical big city?

I could agree with this. : cough: Austin would be a fun spot similar to Nashville. We suck at basketball too.

OK...let's run a scenario from SEC locations that fans would likely fly in from. Let's set everything on flying in on December 4th and flying out on December 7th. That way you are traveling in and still able to spend a full day in the city the day before the SEC Championship football game (per Expedia showing cheapest flights):

Austin to Nashville: Delta Non-Stop starts at $201 with 9 flights under $250.
Austin to Atlanta: Delta Non-Stop starts at $377 with 20 flights under $400.

College Station to Nashville: American Airlines $420 with 4 flights under $425.
College Station to Atlanta: American Airlines $423 with 7 flights under $450.

Oklahoma City to Nashville: Delta $374 with 9 flights under $400.
Oklahoma City to Atlanta: $378 with 10 flights under $400.

Baton Rouge to Nashville: $294 with 3 flights under $300.
Baton Rouge to Atlanta: $299 with 4 flights under $300.

Columbia, MO to Nashville: $484 with 2 flights under $500
Columbia, MO to Atlanta: $590 with 6 flights under $600.

Fayetteville, AR to Nashville: $364 with 8 flights under $400.
Fayetteville, AR to Atlanta: $399 with 5 flights under $400.

It seems like Nashville would be cheaper for most fans to fly into than Atlanta.

Most Friday and Saturday nights one can stay in a 4 star hotel in Manhattan for what a Motel 6 in Nashville costs. It is, of course, depending on what's going on and time of year etc. but Nashville lodging is insanely expensive because they stay booked and there simply aren't enough of them.
