I'd have to go with Jeff Tedford at Cal.

If you want to count the schools being extremely stupid in how they do it - Derek Dooley

Jim Leavitt at USF is a strong contender.

Mullen at Florida.
1 bad season and they bailed right before they could start just buying him players.

USC firing Lane Kiffin

Mack Brown at Texas caused a decade long wandering in the wilderness of mediocrity, but it was necessary. Tbh it should have happened a few years earlier...as in right after losing the CCG to Bama and not stepping down for the head coach in waiting, Will Muschamp. Of course we know Muschamp didn't exactly light the world on fire as HC at other programs, but who knows how he would have done at Texas?
While I think firing MB was ultimately the catalyst for the lost decade, dumb hiring decisions (Charlie Strong, Mensa Tom) played a much bigger role. I really hope all that is behind us now, at least Sark is trending in the right direction with steady improvement over his 3 seasons.

Gus Malzahn at Auburn. They haven't had a winning season since.

Petrino at Arkansas.
Followed by smile, a drunk, a thief and I didn't know what to do.

Frank solich - Nebraska

That's one of the most common answers, but it's actually one of the worst answers.
He had gone 7-7 in 2002 once he ran out of Osborne's players. He really just have been fired after 2002. Even the 9-3 season in 2003 was about as ugly as a 9-3 season can possibly get. They had a really easy schedule in the crappy Big 12 North Division and all 3 of their losses were by at least 17 points.
I also don't see what he did at Ohio that really qualifies him as a Power 5 coach, let alone a coach for a team as prestigious as Nebraska. He turned Ohio into a consistently above-average MAC team, but still never won the MAC. So what. His Ohio record was 115-82 overall and 77-46 in MAC games, which is hardly earth shattering. And apparently the coaching market didn't think he was a Power 5 coach, with how he never got a Power 5 offer after Nebraska.

The Jeff Jagodzinski situation at BC was the dumbest thing I've ever seen an AD do

Yeah, and what's most amazing about Jagodzinski is how he had a career decline like nothing else I've ever seen after BC fired him.
BC stupidly fired him after the 2008 season for interviewing for interviewing for an NFL head coach job that he didn't get. By 2012, Jagodzinski was wide receivers coach for an NAIA school called Ave Maria. By 2017, he was offensive coordinator for Notre Dame High School in Chatganooga, Tennessee. You can look at his Wikipedia article- I'm not joking.

Leach was fired at Texas Tech and Mangino was fired at Kansas the same year. Kansas at least seems to have found a good one in Leipold after all these years.

Mark Mangino at Kansas
Mike Leach at Texas Tech
Ralph Friedgen at Maryland
