Because the NFL prohibits players from being drafted right out of high school, players who intend on going that far have to play in college.

Blatantly false. NFL players come from all backgrounds including those that never played college football.

Missouri is more red than most of the rest of the SEC states. Republican dominated congress and governor.

The other issue is the NCAA isn't some 3rd party in all this. The NCAA literally is every single member institution. The NCAA is not some company hired to create and enforce rules. It is a collection of schools themselves, monitoring themselves.

It is like an HOA.

This is ignorant as hell, you realize the NFL is a non-profit as well, right? Has nothing to do with their "books"

NFP or not they're heading for an anti trust case, which they will lose. They're are no viable alternatives to the NCAA, so they don't have a leg to stand on.

And laws are being passed that demand they be allowed.

It's not against the law for them to get paid now and they can't make the NCAA rule them eligible despite the new law. So again...what changes?

Sounds like the destruction of college football as we know it.

Sure, the NCAA is a voluntary membership, and teams have to agree to follow their rules. The problem is, the NCAA has locked up all the TV market, and has basically become a monopoly. If a Cali school wanted to leave, they'd have nowhere to go and no one to play. And that's "unfair".

And if they allow players to make money where other schools don't, then that's going to affect recruiting. Why play at Bama or Ohio State for free, when you get to make $$$ over the table at USC? And before you dismiss this, consider- I'm an LSU fan. I've seen a lot of guys leave for the draft early, because "they need the money". They have no concept of finances... they think a million dollar contract is gonna make them set for life. They don't understand that people make a million in a decade, and are in no way set for life, they're middle class and need to keep earning.

I find it humorous that you, one of the biggest NCAA bootlickers on here, is posting this stuff. Maybe you can get your friends Dan Wolken and Pat Forde to write some more articles so you can spam the board with that drivel too.

I agree. The student athlete is being paid (tuition, room, food, stipends). If a college athlete can go out and seek additional money from sponsors, then they should be on the hook for the other expenditures provided by the college.
Also when an athlete goes out and gets that endorsement, should some of the endorsement not come back to the university since without that association the athlete would likely not have the notoriety associated with the venture (think back to Tua and the Bama jersey argument).
In any case I think the federales (USSC) will likely overturn a state findings based on the fact that there is no way this could ever be made fair. I hate the NCAA on most days, but to be honest what we currently have works about as good as anything proposed.

It doesn't surprise me that those states are passing them. It would stun me to see any SEC states pass them besides maybe Missouri.

Well have fun getting any respectable player to come play at your school when they could just go elsewhere and get paid/sign endorsement deals... what a stupid arse comment.

Title IX gonna frick this up. Watch and see

My thoughts exactly.

Wait until those California lefties find out that this law would destroy Title IX if it were to go into effect.

Yet the PAC has some of the worst fan interest and attendance numbers.

No folks in the seats makes it hard for advertisers to write the checks.

BamaGradinTN:

One State, but it is ONE big state. California has 40 million people, 4 Pac 12 teams, one of them a Brand name in football (USC) and one a brand name blue blood in basketball (UCLA). California alone has enough House members to shake this up in the U.S. Congress. It would not shock me if Oregon and Washington follow suite. New York soon after. Someone said Colorado has already started doing something similar.
