What happens when it’s apparent that Haslam’s “control” of the program isn’t the issue and actually college sports has radically changed since 1998?

I can only speak for the UT fans that I work with and am friends with here in East TN, and for them, it was probably 75% Penn State and wanting to never hear their school associated with that scandal at all and 25% the tone deafness of trying to make that hire when anyone in connection to the fanbase would know how badly it would go over.
So they were mad about the hire itself and also mad that someone would be so out of touch that they would have to explain why they were mad. None of them legit thought Gruden was coming.

And for those defending the Haslams... Right now, Gov. Haslam is retaliating by trying to cut the board of trustees in half and pick all the appointments. This would require a change in state law and imbalance the entire system (right now each party has a say in the composition of the BoT). Further, he's retaliating against UT's revolt against his plans to outsource labor by attempting to destroy tenure and have fricking standardized evaluations as though college were fricking high school. Yeah, they need to be involved.
