LSU picked Mike Archer (the current DC) over Steve Spurrier.....
What had Steve Spurrier done through November of 1986 to convince you he was the man? At the same time LSU was looking for a coach so was Alabama, Southern Cal and Texas. Those are pretty good programs. They never thought to interview him.

For Auburn, I think it's rushing 2 D-lineman on 4th and 31. Cost Ron Roberts his job.

Hiring Charlie Strong

archer got the nod at the recommendation of Arnsbarger, but really was a no name at the time as well..
LSU in that time frame was cheap when it came to hiring coaches
Bo Rein - $50k
Jerry Stovall - $42k
Bill Arnsparger - $80k
Mike Archer - $88.4k
Curley Hallman - $90k
Gerry Dinardo - $95k
Nick Saban - $2.3M

I remember it well. But for almost 40 years I've heard LSU fans say "we turned down Steve Spurrier!" All I'm asking is what had Spurrier done up until that point? It's like Sam Bowie being picked over Michael Jordan. OF COURSE if there had been a crystal ball LSU would have chosen Spurrier. Of course he still probably would have gone to Gainesville after the 1989 season when Galen Hall was fired.

This was unforgivable:
Nah, it was funny as hell. Totally worth it and still chuckle about it today.

It was also because the players wanted Archer. Who knows how Bo Rein would have been as head coach because of that horrific plane crash on a recruiting trip to Shreveport.

It was when LSU fans went batshit crazy when the Bama fan tea bagged their best fan while he was taking a nap.
Everyone laughed but LSU fans and players.
Had he been awake, it would have just been another normal fun time for LSU fans.

Yes. I 100% grew up a florida fan, both parents were alum. I would've competed there, but sr year they hired the one person i hated the most in the world, my club coach
that's my villain origin story as a gump.
