Does it concern you that a guy who had substantially more talent than all of his competition was losing 3 games per year on average?

I see you keep tryin to push this line. Let’s looks at some of those losses shall we?

2014: Ole Miss, Air Force
(Won conference & Fiesta Bowl)

2015: BYU, Utah St., New Mexico, Air Force
(Won Poinsettia Bowl)

2016: Wyoming, Air Force, Baylor
(Lost Cactus Bowl to Baylor)

2017: Washington St., Virginia, Fresno St.
(Later beat Fresno St in conference championship and Oregon in Las Vegas Bowl)

2018: Oklahoma St., San Diego St., Fresno St.
(Beat Fresno is reg. season, lost to Fresno in conference championship)

2019: BYU, Washington
(Won conference championship, lost bowl to Washington)

Being that Boise is a mid-major school that regularly plays at least 2 games a season against Power 5 schools, none of the losses he had at Boise stand out as bad. In fact his record is damn good. If you have even an ounce of honesty an objectivity you will admit as much.

Harsin is a better hire than I think most were anticipating Auburn making at this juncture, but I’m not sure his overall coaching record is a very good litmus test. BSU has more resources than any other Mountain West school, and likely more than several of them combined. It’s in a beautiful city, has a unique stadium, and better facilities than a lot of P5 schools. It would be a significant red flag if his record at BSU were any worse than that.

ETA: For reference, from 2000-2013, BSU had 4 seasons with 3 or more losses. From 2014-2019, BSU matched that number.

Spot on. The days when he was in serious conversations about our next HC made me sick. Good luck Auburn, at least you have a Chad Morris.

Again, by the numbers, this time class rankings

You missed the point about how Boise has far greater resources than their competitors. Of course he is going to recruit better than them. Boise, Idaho is the only city worth a damn throughout the entire region.

This wasn't a very good hire, imo. The thing about Boise State is whoever they hire next is going to post similar recruiting success. And similar success in wins.

Harsin is stepping into the toughest conference in America and will no longer enjoy the built in advantages he currently has.

What's his overall winning percentage? You're gonna need a guy who wins 85% of his games if you think you're going to compete with your rival. Harsin is good, but he's not that good.

Hope you guys didn't back the Brinks truck up to his house like you did with Malzahn. Honestly, now that Malzahn is gone I like Auburn a hell of a lot more than I did before. I'd love to see you guys succeed and make Saban frickin retire. Won't happen with Harsin though. Simple as that.

So he gets no credit for anything he did good at Boise. Anything he accomplished at Boise doesn’t count, didn’t even happen, doesn’t even matter. And everyone should look for the slightest negative and focus only on that. Ok. I’ve got it now.

Amongst Mountain West cities are Fresno, San Jose, and a little place called San Diego. As well as locations in Utah and Colorado. But yeah, how are you going to compete with exotic Boise, Idaho?

But you think Pittman can? Or have you finally accepted your role as the best of the bottom tier in the SEC?

Can you not read? I said the entire region. Southern California is not in the same region as Boise, Idaho. He was also recruiting against Honolulu, Hawaii. Are you going to claim that Honolulu is in the same region as well? I mean, I guess you can say that Fresno and San Jose are somewhat close, but like someone else said, those places don't appear to give a shite about football. If they did they wouldn't be in the Mountain West. They would play in the Pac12.

Are you implying that he had superior talent because he dominated recruiting in Idaho?

How many legitimate FBS prospects do you think the Potato State turns out every recruiting cycle?

The entire argument is based on how BSU has far more talent at their disposal than their Mountain West brethren. Where do you think they are getting that talent? Against whom do you think they are recruiting?

Except that one of the other arguments being put forth ITT in what a disastrous hire AU has made is that Arky passed on Harsin last year when they hired Pittman. Are you saying that Pittman will be more successful at Arky than Harsin will be at AU?

Boise changed conferences in 2010, which significantly raised the strength of schedule. 2010 was about half way through Petersen's tenure.

Here's a post from an AU forum where a guy ran the SoS numbers:

quote:

Harsin took over in the last year of BSU's probation for LOIC (which was BS on a scale comparable to any of AU's probations) and down 9 scholarship players after a loss of 3/year from '11-'13. He faced a much tougher SOS of -1.77 (-1.48 if you leave out this year, which was their weakest year by far). For comparison's sake AU's SOS in the Malzahn era was 6.06.

Dan Hawkins faced an incredibly weak SOS of -5.18, so I really don't see his record as all that comparable to Harsin, so please stop with all the "He's thuh werst coach they've had out there" whining.

Dan Hawkins faced a -5.18 SoS. Harsin was at -1.7 on average. That's a massive jump. For reference, AU's SoS is +6.06

He’s coached white baws. Let’s see what he does with Auburn recruits. Not saying he won’t be successful, just waiting to see.

I don't give a shite where they're getting their talent. What I'm saying is that frickin San Diego and Honolulu are not in the same region as Boise, Idaho. I would imagine they're pulling talent from Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Northern California mostly.

This thread isn't about Arkansas. I make no claims as to the future of Pittman vs Harsin, but it is true that we passed on Harsin, FWIW.

Again, you are saying that BSU should be head and shoulders above the rest of their conference because, and I quote: " Of course he is going to recruit better than them. Boise, Idaho is the only city worth a damn throughout the entire region."

Aren't you implying that recruits from "Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Northern California mostly" are flocking to BSU because of the lure of the big-city charms of Boise, Idaho?

You're arguing yourself into a corner. I'll make it simple: You believe Harsin is a shitty coach despite his .780 winning percentage because - why, exactly?

I think this was a very good hire. Is it ok to say Gus was just a wierd guy yet? This guy seems less wierd.

Very impressive resume. Wonder if he makes the transition to the Power 5 better than Chris Petersen.

This thread feels like 2012...arkie fans saying we got a coach they didn't want and believing the coach they got is better than the one Auburn has...for those suggesting recruiting could be an issue it is a legit concern.

Once he fills out his staff we will know more. IMO Auburn is going to do top-15 recruiting under just about anyone. The problem is more roster management than recruiting if you work from the assumption we aren't going to take the next step like Clemson, uga or bama. I am hopeful he'll have a better vision for running a major college football team.

Do you know what systems he plans to run?

I know there were coaches being retained, but I didn’t know if he had the latitude to at least ensure the schemes he prefers will be used.

Setting aside the recruiting and regional concerns, I would think ability to do things his own way would be a major concern to avoid internal fights and concerns over whether your players and those he wants to recruit fit the schemes.

Mostly a joke, though Auburn did finish 13th in penalties per game last year ( a far cry from when they finished 1st in 2016 & 2017 )
