Since Nick Saban arrived at Alabama, LSU has been the school that provided the greatest threat to Alabama’s dominance in the SEC West. Yes, the Tide had an eight game winning streak in the series beginning January 9, 2012, but many of those games were hard fought, physical contests. Once it was announced that Ed Orgeron would be stepping down after the season, there was a keen interest among Alabama fans about who AD Scott Woodward would land.

Brian Kelly’s name came out of left field, and it was a shock.

I think it’s going to be a spectacular disaster for several reasons, but let’s start with this: what has he ever won? He has managed to have some nice seasons, even going undefeated in 2012 before running into Alabama, but his Fighting Irish teams have struggled with outright terrible opponents multiple times in every season. He has been to the BCS Championship Game once and the College Football Playoff twice on the back of a weak schedule, and the aggregate score of those three losses was 103-31. I’m not sure what it is about him that makes LSU think he’ll be successful in the SEC, but we’ll see how it goes soon enough. Some other reasons:

They are scared.

They are shitting themselves over LSU having not only a competent coach, but an elite one.

If your opponents like your coach, it’s bad

If your opponents hate your coach, it’s good

This is a serious response from a Bama fan. I think Kelly is a fine coach but he's not somebody that strikes fear into the opponent.

There is an 8 page thread on Tidefans called "Brian Kelly to LSU" LINK

There's nothing wrong with college sports fans caring about news around their own conference, btw. But it's weird to care and pretend you don't

Kelly is a very good coach with a very high floor. It's an interesting fit.

I dunno what else there is to say about this or why we keep acting like this hire is some sort of lightning rod. He's about as "boring" a hire as can exist (in a good way). He's not a high variance guy like Napier is at Florida or something. He's gonna win at least 8-9 games most every year. The question is will he have LSU as a Top 5 program or a Top 10-20 program most years.

Who knows.

Saban beat the piss out of Kelly both times they played, but ok.

To be fair to the gumps, would any of the possible candidates have instilled any fear in them? They have the greatest coach in the history of the sport. The only thing they truly fear is the day that Saban announces his retirement.

And I really hate the "he hasn't won anything argument." No coach has ever won anything until they win something. Saban hadn't won anything major prior to being hired by LSU. Miles hadn't won anything major prior to being hired. Orgeron literally never won anything at all prior to being hired by LSU. All won lots of games and a natty during their tenures.

I am not saying Kelly will win a natty at LSU, but I do believe that he will at least have LSU in the hunt within a couple of years. I find it hard to believe that the program will crash and burn.

Hell, even Orgeron regressing to his Ole Miss days couldn't do that.

Agree with SOG.

Nobody knows anything at this point as to how this will go.

Alabama fans IRL don't believe this will be a disaster, and also aren't "scared."

No one knows. Let the man recruit and actually coach some games first, so we have some basis to comment.

The hyperbole in these types of threads is really falling on deaf ears right now, IMO, but they keep being made over and over for some reason.
