Booster being their students and taxpayers because that $54 million is coming straight out of the general fund

As he should. LSU/Woodward agreed to this contract. They should pay him his full contract buyout. Woodward will forever be known as a stain on Louisiana State University.

LSU should pull a Texas Tech.

It could make sense if he is being offered other HC gigs. Right now, his contract contains a mitigation clause, so his buyout is reduced by his salary at a new job. So if LSU owes him $54M over let's say the next 6 years, he gets paid $9M/year from LSU. But, if Penn State hires him on a 6 year contract at $8M/year, he still only gets a total of $9M/year ($1M from LSU and $8M from Penn State). If he agrees to a reduced buyout, he will get it as a lump sum payment and it will not be offset by future salary. So let's say he agrees to walk away for $30M. He'll get $30M from LSU and still get his $8M/yr from Penn State, for a total of $78M over the next 6 years.

This is a stupid move by LSU. What coach is going to sign a "guaranteed contract" that LSU renegs if boosters get impatient?
At that point, the contracts mean nothing.

Dude is 64 years old. He would be an idiot to not demand the $54M that LSU owes him.

Sounds like LSU was writing checks they couldn't cash and now they're fricked.
Top to bottom, the way this has been handled is a terrible look for coaching candidates eyeing LSU.

Rumor has it HRV has offered 54 million for a 49% share of tigerdroppings.com... he would stand only behind chicken in the mod pecking order

The lack of LSU posters in this thread just means they are all scrambling to come up with their new story.

And he should get it, unless he decides he wants a lump sum payment.

Kelly's contract required him to be given 7 days written notice if he was being fired for cause.
He was not given any notice so LSU is on the hook for $54 million.
The handling of the firing is on Woodward. Don't blame the Louisiana Governor for insisting on cleaning house.

Want all the money over time? Want lesser money, but paid this second

You won't be getting any coaches in the future

what leverage does LSU think they have to pay less than what he’s owed in his contract
At this point in time, LSU’s primary case would seem to be “he sucked and we really don’t like him personally so we shouldn’t have to pay him what we agreed to.”

I'm about BK's same age, so if I were negotiating this for myself:
(a) it would depend on how much lesser was to be paid in one lump sum; anything north of $45m I'd take the money and run
(b) if I agreed to the $9m/yr payout, I'd want a clause that stipulated my heirs would continue to receive it if I died before it was fulfilled
But from what we've seen of BK's "character" he may drag it out for the full amount with the intent to damage LSU's reputation and ability to attract a top shelf coach.

LSU is pure grit and gumbo - we will fire you and figure it out later.
Impressive.

What new story? Are you shocked that there is a negotiation going on?
My guess is he ultimately takes less to get lump sum or quicker payouts. Nothing surprising about any of this.
