I thought there would be data here. Where's Sean Bean when you need him...

We beat a Blake Bortles led UCF team in 2013 that was their only loss of the season. They won the Fiesta bowl against #6 Baylor that year (RGIII?). We finished #4 that year.
ETA: Their final ranking was #10. Beat a #6 clemson and #5 @ Mizzou that year too.

Top 3 Non-conference Road Wins
1. West Virginia 2011
2. Arizona St. 2005 (a home game in Tempe, AZ after Katrina/Rita)
3. Washington 2009
This doesn't include neutral site games, which had a couple of big ones like Oregon, North Carolina, or Wisconsin

2011 @Penn State
1995 @NC State I guess
Unfortunately Bama lost 2 good ones to UCLA in 2000. And OU in 2002. Those were the dark times.

I think Oregon 2011 might be bigger than any of these, but as you wrote it was neutral site.

ETA: Nvm.... you said road wins. nonconference road and no rivals is tough for us since we do Clemson every year.
We beat UCF at their place that year. That counts as a road win.

I only checked the Big 6 plus South Carolina....
But based off Final AP Rankings, here are the biggest true road victories for each program against an OOC opponent since 1990:
#5 UCLA (1997) AND #5 Miami (2003) for Tennessee
#10 Florida State (2012) for Florida
#11 Notre Dame (2017) for Georgia)
#11 Clemson (2012) for South Carolina
#17 W. Virginia (2011) for LSU
#18 Kansas State (2014) for Auburn
#33 Penn State (2011) for Alabama (had to go look at the receiving votes)
***Ridiculous how 2011 LSU beat #17 West Virginia in Morgantown AND #4 Oregon in Dallas.... not to be outdone by beating #1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. It's ridiculous that LSU was even forced to play a re-match game in order to win the National Title.

Seriously, we've barely played any decent non-conference opponents on the road since the 80's.

Quite frankly, lsu would be national champs even if they lost 70-0 in the nc game, based on the season
But that isnt how the system "worked"

1990s our schedules were generally pretty terrible. We also had the equivalent of a "rival" that took a spot every year in Southern Miss.
The 2000s we had H&H to UCLA, Oklahoma and Penn State (2011 but was in that batch of scheduled games).
Then Saban arrived and we started playing all the neutral site games. Now, thank goodness, we're going back to home and homes.

@ Texas 1992
Big win for Mississippi State. I bet Texas would be too scared to schedule a home and home with Mississippi State nowadays

You are probably correct. Zero upside for the Longhorns to play on the road against a program like State.

You forgot the 1990 Louisiana/ULaLa/USL/whatever, 1991 Memphis and 2010 Duke games.
